BRIDGEWATER The Yankees are cautiously optimistic that Spencer Jones will be back in action for the Somerset Patriots relatively soon. The 24-year-old outfielder went on the 7-day injured list May 6 with what Yankees manager Aaron Boone said was an intercostal injury.Somerset manager Raul Dominguez clarified this past weekend that Jones woke up the morning of May 4 while the team was in Richmond feeling something in a muscle between his ribs.

Dominguez held Jones out of the lineup that day to be safe, and after an MRI it was determined that Jones would need an IL stint. We dont have a date for him, Dominguez said.

We just go day by day because if we put a date if we say two weeks, maybe hes gonna be ready before that, or maybe after, so we just go day by day with him.The manager did confirm, though, that the Patriots dont expect it to be an extended absence.

Jones has already missed 12 games, but he has progressed to doing defensive drills and hitting front toss during batting practice.Jones, the Yankees No.

2 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, appeared to be relatively close to a call-up to Triple-A prior to the injury.

He clubbed nine home runs with a .926 OPS through 26 games well on pace to shatter his 17 home runs from last season. We just go day by day to see how he reacts everything that he needs to do on the field before hes ready to play, Dominguez said.Outfielder Cole Gabrielson is also day-to-day after going on the IL May 8.Left-hander Edgar Barclay, meanwhile, was transferred to the full-season IL last Thursday because he needs Tommy John surgery, Dominguez said.

The 26-year-old was off to a solid start with 3.12 ERA in five appearances (four starts).Right-hander Trystan Vrieling, the Yankees No.

22 prospect, came off the injured list last Friday after making two rehab starts in Tampa. He threw 60 pitches in scoreless three innings against Portland, allowing three singles and three walks with one strikeout.

He fired 34 strikes with four swing-and-misses.

He mostly sat 92-94 mph with his four-seam fastball while mixing in his cutter, curveball, slider and sinker. Its gonna depend how he reacts or how hes feeling for the next outing to see if we can give him more pitches and just go from there, Dominguez said..
