Dawn Staley Sends Clear Message on Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese Drama
It has been nearly a week since Caitlin Clark knocked Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese to the court during the Indiana Fever's 93-58 win, yet the discourse around the situation is far from over. While some viewed the third-quarter foul as just a regular basketball play, which is the approach the two 2024 WNBA All-Rookie selections took after the game, many around the sport view it as so much more. There are many questions regarding how Clark and Reese are officiated, and whether the discussions surrounding their rivalry are beneficial for the game.
South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley expressed her thoughts on the matter as straightforwardly as possible when appearing on "The Breakfast Club" podcast.
Staley revealed that not only do the WNBA officials have a tough gig, but the more attention the sport gets from Reese and Clark, the better."I think the officiating has a hard job, that's one," Staley said.
"To decipher whether or not that's a flagrant 1 or not.
...
But I do think they understand the dynamics of Angel and Caitlin.
...
I think it's great for our game.
...
Like it's a sport.
Treat us like a sport.
Don't treat us anything other than being a sport.
That happens in every sport, soccer, basketball, football, so let it be."Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) passes around Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Grace SmithIndyStar USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesWhile many fans and analysts have been outraged over the incident, Staley said she will take the same approach as Clark and Reese in addressing it."Im going to take the lead of Angel and Caitlin," Staley said.
"And that lead is they said it was a foul, the officials got it right and were moving on.
Im going to take their lead."She also added that she is very much looking forward to seeing the two stars face off again later this season.
Following Saturday's contest, Clark holds the series lead as the Fever have won four of the five meetings.
In terms of when Staley and the rest of WNBA fans will be able to see them play again, they'll have to wait until June 7, when the teams square off in the WNBA Commissioner's Cup.Related: Big Caitlin Clark Announcement Made on ThursdayDawn Staley Sends Clear Message on Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese Drama first appeared on Athlon Sports on May 22, 2025.
