Red Sox announce decision on surging top prospect Roman Anthony's future | Sporting News

The Boston Red Sox are in third place in the American League East.

They are 25-26 and have the top prospect in baseball waiting to make his debut.

Roman Anthony is hitting .316/.449/.510 in Triple-A.

He has six home runs and has seemingly nothing left to prove.

However, manager Alex Cora recently revealed that he is not in the team's plans right now, but will be eventually.

He carried the same sentiment for the team's No.

2 prospect Marcelo Mayer.

"Thats a great question.

I understand where youre coming from," Cora said per MassLive's Christopher Smith.

"But we are where were at.

Right now weve got some guys here that are playing great baseball.

We understand that at one point, I do believe theyre going to be part of this.

But as of right now, we havent made that decision." The Red Sox outfield is already facing a logjam.

Adding Anthony would only further complicate things.

Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela and Jarren Duran have all done their part for the team and are not really giving the team a reason to bench them.

Additionally, Masataka Yoshida is nearing a return.

With Rafael Devers now occupying the DH role, Yoshida will need to find at-bats in the outfield as well.

The easiest path to getting Anthony in the big leagues without an injury would be making Rafaela a superutility.
