The Chicago Blackhawks were one number away from winning the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery.

If the final ping-pong ball bounced and showed a nine or 14, the Blackhawks would have secured the number one overall pick.

Fate was kind to Blackhawks fans, and the New York Islanders won the lottery.

The San Jose Sharks, the team with the best odds at number one, will pick second, and the Blackhawks are picking third.

The Hawks fell one spot, and that's not a bad thing.

Now, general manager Kyle Davidson, director of amateur scouting Mike Doneghey, and the Blackhawks' scouting team can start finalizing their draft board.

" GM Ron Luce ", On Tap Sports Net's resident salary capologist, is already elbow deep in his draft wishlist.

But why is it a good thing that the Blackhawks aren't picking first overall? Is there a specific prospect that they are shooting for? Can Davidson trade the No.

3 overall pick for an established player? Looking Ahead to the 2025 NHL Draft The current consensus number one pick is defenseman Matthew Schaefer.

The Blackhawks have built an impressive stockpile of prospects on the blueline.

Artyom Levshunov, Sam Rinzel, and Kevin Korchinski are all promising players that Kyle Davidson drafted.

That's not including Stan Bowman's picks like Alex Vlasic.

Blackhawks fans don't have to worry about whether Davidson will draft another defenseman.

That is, unless Schaefer somehow falls in the draft.

This is where things get interesting.

After Schaefer, there isn't a defenseman who is expected to be drafted high.

The Blackhawks need another elite forward.

Their blueline is promising.

The Hawks' future depth is going to be interesting.

But as things stand, they are light at the top.

It's Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar, and a lot of empty space.

Michael Misa, Porter Martone, James Hagens, Caleb Desnoyers, and Anton Frondell are the forwards expected to be drafted high in this year's class.

However, if any of those players are drafted, it's still not a sure thing that they will be a top-six player or ready to perform at the top level that the Blackhawks need at this very moment.

Building a team only through the draft isn't possible.

Eventually, the Blackhawks will add established NHLers to their roster to flesh it out.

Could the Blackhawks now trade their pick for a young, established forward? Those trades are rare in the NHL, but Davidson could look to make an unprecedented move and a trade.

As Twitter prospect sickos race to be the first to make meaningless bold proclamations, On Tap Sports Net will provide you with knowledge on the top-prospects in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Over the coming weeks, we'll look at some of the promising prospects the Blackhawks might draft.
