Dismal Devin Williams stat proves Yankees star is in uncharted territory | Sporting News

Devin Williams was supposed to give the New York Yankees a super bullpen.
A unit that was already considered one of the best in Major League Baseball last year sent a mid-rotation starter and a promising infield prospect for one of the game's elite closers.
However, the two-time All-Star has been far from that during the early months of the season.
Those issues compounded Tuesday night in a 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres.
Holding a 3-0 lead entering the eighth inning, Williams struck out two while loading the bases with two walks and a single.
He threw 21 pitches before giving way to Luke Weaver, who gave up four runs to the next two batters.
Three of those runs were charged to Williams, who is entering uncharted territory in regard to his struggles.
The Athletic's Chris Kirschner pointed out a stat that perfectly summed up the situation.
"Devin Williams has allowed 13 runs this season.
It's the same amount of runs he allowed in 2023 and 2024 combined," Kirschner posted on X.
"13 runs is tied for the second most runs he's allowed in a season in his career.
It's May." Williams posted a 1.66 ERA over the last three seasons combined so it's certainly concerning to see his struggles linger into the month of May.
The Yankees also have five losses when leading in the eighth inning or later this season, which leads MLB, per Katie Sharp .
Given the issues they have elsewhere on the roster, the Yankees need to find a solution to Williams' struggles quickly before it spirals beyond repair..
