The new pope is a Chicago baseball fan. Does he support the Cubs?

The Chicago Cubs will have to take an L on this one.

The new pope doesn't root for your team.

Catholics around the world, and especially in the United States, celebrated the historic announcement of Cardinal Robert Prevost, being named the new pope on May 8 at the Vatican City.

He's the first American-born pope in history.

Prevost, who will now be called Pope Leo XIV, is from the south side of Chicago.

The Cubs, on the north side, thought for a moment that the pope was one of their own.

The team's X account offered their congratulations to Pope Leo XIV and posted a picture of the famous Wrigley Field sign that read, "Hey, Chicago, he's a Cubs fan!"Congratulations to Pope Leo XIV! pic.twitter.com/s02yDDegQd Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) May 8, 2025Just one problem.

He's not a Cubs fan.

So, prayers answered Milwaukee Brewers fans.

The 69-year-old's brother set the record straight in an interview with WGN-TV after a report surfaced noting that he was a Cubs fan."He was never ever a Cubs fan so I don't know where that came from," John Joseph Prevost said of his brother, who has spent much of his career in Peru as a missionary and first became a Cardinal in 2022.

"He was always a (White) Sox fan."There is a Cubs connection in the family, however, as well as another one of the Brewers' longtime rivals.

His mom was indeed a Cubs fan and his dad was a St.

Louis Cardinals fan.

But Pope Leo XIV was not."Our mom's family was from the north side," John Joseph Prevost told the Chicago news station.

"So, that's why they were Cubs fans.
