Texas A&M Struggles to Keep Pace With Texas After Rivalry Renewal
After a 13-year hiatus, Texas and Texas A&M renewed the historic Lone Star Showdown for the 2024-25 season.
The two schools met in all varsity sports that both schools sponsored for the first time since Texas A&M departed the Big 12 for the SEC in 2012.Texas and Oklahoma joined the SEC in 2024, which led to the rivalrys renewal.
Outside of football, the Longhorns and Aggies met in other sports during non-conference play in the past decade, but never on a consistent basis. The renewal of the rivalry was highly-anticipated, especially in football.
The Aggies lost a heartbreaker in 2011, so they were looking to make a statement.
Unfortunately for Texas A&M, the football meeting didnt go its way, nor did many meetings in other sports. Most recently, the Longhorns swept the Aggies in a three-game baseball series, capping off a dominant athletic year against the Aggies.
Texas A&M was competitive in all three games, but Texas proved why it's the No.

The Longhorns currently lead the showdown 11-4.Texas asserted its dominance in the rivalry early this year with a win in football in November.
The Longhorns beat the Aggies 17-7 to close the regular season.
The win secured Texas spot in the SEC Championship Game and College Football Playoff and eliminated Texas A&M from both.In mens and womens basketball, the Aggies went 1-3 combined against the Longhorns.
Despite winning the first mens basketball matchup in College Station, Texas A&M dropped the next two.
This included a loss in the SEC Tournament, which helped Texas clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament. On the womens side Texas dominated Texas A&M in their lone meeting.
Texas has won six straight meetings in women's basketball.
The two schools are not scheduled to meet in softball this season.A big part of the Aggies recent struggles against the Longhorns is the revolving door at their head coaching positions, which includes former baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle departing for Texas.
Texas A&M has hired new coaches in football, mens basketball and baseball in the past two years, which has led to a lack of continuity.
Despite the recent struggles and coaching changes, the Aggies are primed for a bounce back year.
Mike Elko is entering his second year as head football coach and new basketball coach Bucky McMillan has already built a talented roster.
For now, however, Texas has a firm grip on the rivalry.Related: ESPNs Mel Kiper Jr.
