The San Antonio Spurs put fans through a largely expected whirlwind on Friday, as Gregg Popovich announced his retirement after 29 seasons as the head coach.

The Spurs immediately announced that Mitch Johnson, who acted as head coach after Popovich recovered from a stroke last season, would take over as skipper. While not as flashy as hiring Michael Malone, Becky Hammon, or Quin Snyder, their commitment to continuity has to be applauded. The head coach hire is only the first of several moves the Spurs should make this summer.

Along with two lottery picks, the Spurs have the means to sign high-level free agents or swing for the fences with a blockbuster trade. Here are the best three roster moves the Spurs could make.Dec 29, 2024; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid (11) backs toward the basket against San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson (0) in the second half at Target Center.

Add Naz ReidBy a trade, sign-and-trade, or free agent acquisition if he opts out of his player option, the Spurs should target Naz Reid this summer. The Spurs clearly need a backup center behind Victor Wembanyama, and the 2023-24 Sixth Man of the Year has already proven himself to be the best backup big in the NBA.He can defend, space the floor, and handle the ball well for a true center, and there is reason to believe that his skillset would fit well next to Wembanyama, allowing them to share the floor. If Reid decides to leave the Minnesota Timberwolves, he will likely be on the hunt for a starting job after backing up Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns for the last several seasons, although the Spurs can offer him the occasional starting minutes as well as a chance to play on a team with long-term title aspirations. If Webanyama goes down, the Spurs' season is all but over, but by adding Reid, the Spurs would be able to stay afloat until their superstar returns.

With multiple ways to add him, the Spurs should be on the lookout for a path for Reid to come to San Antonio.2024-25 NBA stats: 14.2 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 2.3 APG, 0.9 BPG, 46.2 FG%, 37.9 3PT%Jan 4, 2024; San Antonio, Texas, USA; Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (34) loses control of the ball while driving to the basket against San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) during the first half at Frost Bank Center.

Trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo (with one condition)No matter what, the Spurs should trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

If the Milwaukee Bucks make him available, he is the rare player who is worth a true king's ransom, and a trio of him, Wembanyama, and De'Aaron Fox would make the Spurs immediate title threats. In order for this move to be perfect instead of just really, really good, the Spurs would have to hold onto Stephon Castle.

If the Bucks make it clear that they will only do business with Castle included, then the Spurs can and should trade the rookie of the year, but having him in the backcourt next to Fox would present a terrifying defense for the rest of the league to contend with. The Spurs, Houston Rockets, and Oklahoma City Thunder are, realistically, the only landing spots.

They have the ability to match salary, attach quality young talent in the deal, and have the draft picks to allow the Bucks to rebuild.

As a two-time MVP, Antetokounmpo is one of the very best players in the league, is under contract for three more seasons, and is in the middle of his prime.

While the fit net to Wemby wouldn't be perfect on the offensive end, it's too good of an opportunity to pass up, and the Spurs should pull the trigger no matter what.Retaining Castle, if possible, will only elevate this deal.2024-25 NBA stats: 30.4 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 6.5 APG, 1.2 BPG, 60.1 FG%Duke Blue Devils forward Cooper Flagg Bob Donnan-Imagn Images1.

Draft Cooper FlaggThis move comes down to luck and luck only.

Flagg is by far the best player in the 2025 NBA Draft Class and will be the first overall pick no matter who wins the draft lottery. The Spurs have two lottery picks, their own and one from the Atlanta Hawks, and have a total of a 6.7 percent chance to land the top pick.Flagg was one of the best freshmen ever, and unlike the Greek Freak, would be a perfect, low-cost fit next to Wembanyama.

There is virtually no path for the Spurs to trade for him, so drafting him is the only option.A two-way force, Flagg can defend multiple positions, score the ball, and has been commended for his motor.

He was invited to play on the Select Team with the USA in preparation for the 2024 Olympics and was considered one of the best players in camp, including LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis.Flagg's defense is better than his offense, but he would instantly be the second-best player on the roster, and that includes Fox, an established All-Star.This move is beyond the Spurs' control, but if they land Flagg, any other move they could make would be immediately obsolete.
