LINCOLN Nebraska mens basketball leaned further into the modern and professionalized world of college sports Thursday.

Luca Virgilio is the Huskers new general manager, a role that didnt exist last season, as NU joins other programs in moving away from the traditional structure of recruiting and roster building.

Virgilio was previously Nebraskas director of basketball strategies and business operations.

In his new position, he oversees and manages the composition of the roster and player acquisition, including high school and international players and transfer portal recruiting, as well as player evaluation and retention, according to his bio on the team website.

He will also be the liaison between the coaching staff and administration and the 1890 NIL collective.

He will also oversee budget, scheduling and travel, which were among the responsibilities of his previous role as well.

Amid the frequent and drastic changes to the landscape of college sports, Nebraska has adopted a modern approach to constructing its roster, one that relies heavily on the transfer portal.

As a result, NU is often forced to overhaul its roster in the offseason.

The Huskers have added six transfers in the past month.

The 2024-25 roster included seven players in their first season at NU who had started their college careers elsewhere.

Virgilio joined NU in 2019 after five seasons at St.

Johns, during which he held several positions, including graduate assistant, assistant to coach Chris Mullin and management analyst.

He is from Italy.
