49ers GM explains why 49ers didn't use more draft picks on offensive line
One glaring shortcoming from the San Francisco 49ers' 2025 NFL draft class is the lack of offensive linemen in the 11-player group. There was speculation leading up to the draft that San Francisco might pick an offensive linemen in Round 1, and if they didn't they'd certainly address on Day 2.
They didn't address until Day 3 when they used the 249th overall pick, their 10th of 11, on Iowa guard Connor Colby.
It was clear at the NFL's annual league meeting that the 49ers didn't view the offensive line as a major need, but virtually ignoring the position group felt extreme.
General manager John Lynch on Sunday in a post-draft press conference told reporters why the club opted to pick just one OL.But yeah, there were a number of times that we were interested in adding and it just didn't come our way," Lynch said.
"And youve got to stay true to where you have guys graded, not take guys just to take them but to take guys that you're interested in at that point.
And it just never really aligned.
And so, we were happy to add Colby.
We think he's a really good scheme fit.
Great thing about Iowa is they run a very similar, they run a lot of outside zones, so you get to see a guy like him do things that we do and he does them well.
So, were happy to add that.
But there were a number of times Kyle and I were talking about that at the end that just didn't align, one of those deals and you don't want to force things.
And so, it wasn't our time for that other than Connor and we'll move forward. It makes sense for a team that doesn't prioritize the offensive line to not reach for a player based on their own draft board.
Whether that ultimately works out for them remains to be seen. The 49ers have been okay to this point with a pair of Super Bowl trips and four NFC championship game appearances since 2019, but that's not a guarantee their strategy will work moving forward.
They have to find a long-term replacement for Trent Williams at some point in the near future.
Not to mention their depth this year could be shaky after starting left guard Aaron Banks and swing tackle Jaylon Moore both exited in free agency.
It seemed like a year San Francisco may shift gears and address its OL via the draft.
Instead they skipped it almost entirely. This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 49ers draft picks: GM John Lynch on why OL wasn't a priority.
