Were halfway through the Mid-Penn football regular season, which means we have a big enough sample to start taking stock of the very best in the conference.
Sign up for PennLives high school sports newsletter here Through those five games, these are the very best of the Mid-Penn, as weve settled on our midseason All-Star offense, along with a midseason offensive MVP.
QUARTERBACK Stone Saunders, Bishop McDevitt Buzz: The Crusaders senior quarterback is likely to become PAs career touchdown pass leader this Friday, but has really come on the last few weeks to surge to 20 touchdown passes playing in a much tougher division than a year ago.
The Kentucky commit will have a chance to solidify this spot with big matchups against Cumberland Valley, State College and CD East.
RUNNING BACKS Brad Hockenberry, West Perry Buzz: The Mustangs running back has been prolific leading West Perry to a 4-1 start.
The senior has tallied 847 yards on just 69 carries, scoring 11 times, while also catching eight passes for 131 yards and two scores.
Christian Joy, Trinity Buzz: Joy is one of a handful of returners for the Rocks this year, and has been the center of Trinitys 4-1 start to the year.
The tailback has tallied 879 rushing yards on the year with 13 touchdowns, averaging 11.3 yards per carry.
Janye Statum, Shippensburg Buzz: Shippensburg has been a pleasant surprise this season, starting the year 5-0.
Statum has been a key to that, as the bellcow back has rushed for 649 yards and seven touchdowns on the campaign.
WIDE RECEIVER Dominic Diaz-Ellis, Bishop McDevitt Buzz: Diaz-Ellis has been the Crusaders top wideout this fall, doing a terrific job replacing the production of current Alabama wideout Rico Scott.
Hes tallied 476 yards and five touchdowns.
Josh Smith, Mechanicsburg Buzz: Smith has been a touchdown machine this fall, catching 11 touchdown passes and tallying 535 receiving yards while helping the Wildcats to a 5-0 record.
He also has a kick return touchdown as well, making another leap as a pure playmaker as a senior.
Santana Young, CD East Buzz: Young has made the most of his change of scenery to CD East, as hes now the conference leader in receiving yards with 661 on the season.
Hes snagged five of the Panthers seven touchdown passes this year, helping the team to the programs first 5-0 record ever.
OFFENSIVE LINE Quade Boden, West Perry Buzz: West Perry has made no bones about it: its going to run the football this year.
And its done it well, led by Brad Hockenberry.
But Boden, a four-year starter, has led the push up front at right tackle, helping the Mustangs to a 4-1 mark.
Guner Hiller, Cedar Cliff Buzz: Cedar Cliff has always made its hay with strong trench play, and Hiller has led the group this fall.
With PJ Dent and Kade Finkboner running strong to start the year, some credit is due to the group led by Hiller, who plays tough and uses his wrestling background to his advantage.
Mason Lubold, Susquehanna Township Buzz: Lubold is a senior leader for a young Indians offensive line, and has helped the Hanna offense make a big leap in the pass game while remaining a strong rushing attack despite losing tailback Dorian Smith.
Hes a versatile piece along the front with Division II interest.
Tyler Merrill, Cumberland Valley Buzz: Merrill is one of the very best offensive line prospects in the country, as the junior has offers from basically every top school.
Hes been earning that rep this year, providing lanes consistently for a new-look CV offense.
JJ Torres, Bishop McDevitt Buzz: Torres has taken another step forward for the Crusaders at right tackle, using his 6-5, 300-pound frame to his advantage at right tackle for McDevitt.
Hes helped keep the pocket clean for Stone Saunders and allow for the trio of backs in Naz Jones-Davis, Maurice Barnes and Jerome Larue Jr.
to get going.
ATHLETE Lex Cyrus, Susquehanna Township Buzz: The South Carolina commit might be on pace for his best statistical season as Hanna has taken a big step forward in the passing game.
Cyrus has 417 yards receiving and five scores on the year, while also returning a punt for a touchdown, as the speedster is a threat to score any time the ball is in his hands.
MIDSEASON OFFENSIVE MVP Brad Hockenberry, West Perry Buzz: There are plenty of great candidates, but in terms of value, its hard to look past Hockenberry.
The senior running back has accounted for 58% of West Perrys yards this year as the Mustangs sit at 4-1 despite losing a bevy of talent to graduation, while also playing every down at linebacker for the Elliottsburg squad.
