Daryl Morey talks draft strategy should Sixers keep their pick in 2025

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers won't know if they will keep their pick until the lottery on May 12 in Chicago, but they did a good job of doing in the best position to keep their top 6 protected draft pick.

The Sixers finished 24-58 on the season which gives them a 64% chance at keeping their pick.

If it lands outside the top 6 then it conveys to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of the Al Horford-Danny Green trade back in 2020.

Of course, if it does convey in 2025, the Sixers will have a pick in 2026, but it would be a big help to keep it right now when considering the season they just had.President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey would have a few options to play with should they keep their pick.

He could always trade it or he could select one of the top players in what is being billed as a talented and deep draft.

He did give some insight into how he would handle the pick should they make a selection."Definitely best player available," Morey said succinctly.

"It has to be that in the draft for sure, but we see the pick as sort of a tool to upgrade the team.

It will matter if its one, two, three, four, five, six or we just have the pick in the future.

It could also happen.

Its just a tool to make the team better, but obviously, theres a good chance we take someone.

In that case, it will just be the best player.

Ive never shied from that."There is a school of thought that the Sixers should select more based on need.

They could always use another wing player like VJ Edgecombe or maybe even another catch-and-shoot guy such as Kon Kneuppel.

Lottery night on May 12 will be a big night for this Sixers team as they continue to move forward after a tough season on the hardwood.
