Former Dallas Mavericks star Quentin Grimes has revealed how the players learned about the stunning trade that rocked the team.

It is just over two months since Luka Doncic was traded by the Dallas Mavericks , and still nobody can believe it happened.

The Mavericks fanbase was left infuriated by the Doncic trade , and these angry feelings have not subsided in the time that has passed.

Days ago Doncic returned to Dallas for the first time and scored 45 points for the LA Lakers to lead a win against the team, who finished 10th in the West, scraping into the Play-In Tournament .

The Mavericks were in a hotel in Cleveland preparing for their upcoming matinee game against the Cavaliers.

Unbeknown to them, Doncic was already being sequestered to LA.

Grimes revealed he was phoned by a friend, who was going crazy on Facetime, relaying the news as it broke, with the Mavericks players not told in advance.

He explained his response: Stop playing with me, what do you mean Luka got traded? Then I go to Shams and its like Luka for AD, it funny like 10 seconds later all I hear in the hallway was ayo what the f___? He explained how Naji Marshall, Dereck Lively and PJ Washington all met in the corridors trying to process the news.

I look out my door and its like, its Naji, D-Live, PJ, we just looking at each other, we like, what the f___ just happened? D-Live was like whats going on man?, I had no clue, but the funny thing is we [had] got a text around 9.30 like mandatory players-staff meeting, what does that mean, somebody getting traded, something must have happened.

Mavericks were subsequently hammered in Cleveland Quentin Grimes admitted the trade left them with little sleep, with an early matinee game against the Eastern Conference top seed Cavaliers taking place the next day.

I didnt go to bed until 3 in the morning, friends hitting you up.

Im scrolling through twitter all night, crazy.

Amid a mutinous reaction back home in Dallas, the sleep-deprived Mavericks were embarrassed 144-101 in Cleveland, having been outscored 50-19 in the first quarter.
