Oklahoma Sooners' spring football wrapped on Saturday at the Crimson Combine.

Summer workouts and fall camp are all that stand between the Sooners and a redemption season in 2025.

Much of that redemptive arch is going to come from an offense that should be better than it was a year ago.

Though it's only spring, Brent Venables has been encouraged by what he's seen from his offense. We threw the ball and caught the ball as well as we have since Ive been here, Venables said via The Oklahoman.

If you said something that stood out in the spring, (there were) very few balls on the ground.

Top to bottom throughout the spring.

They did a great job of getting the quarterbacks to throw with precision and confidence.

The passing game struggled to get anything easy in 2024.

It was inefficient and lacked explosiveness.

They couldn't create a lot of plays after the catch.

Oklahoma's yards per attempt dropped from 9.3 in 2023 to 6.1 in 2024.

That wasn't all because of the quarterback play, but it certainly contributed.

But the encouraging signs Venables has seen from the offense this offseason isn't just about the quarterback either.

Venables said yesterday, You look at that group at quarterback or wide receiver or tight end, the additions on the offensive line, you see transformation.

Theyre completely different groups in what they look like from just a few short months ago.Oklahoma's additions of Ben Arbuckle and John Mateer may be the most notable catalysts for the Sooners' offensive improvements, but the offensive linemen, tight ends, and wide receiver additions will also play major factors.

For Oklahoma to improve its win total from a year ago, the offense needs to lead the way.

Oklahoma had good defenses during their dominance in the Big 12 but what made them one of the winningest teams of the 21st century was their prolific offenses.

Whether it was Josh Heupel ushering in the Air Raid, the Heisman seasons of Jason White or Sam Bradford, Landry Jones record-setting career, or the Lincoln Riley-era of offensive success, Oklahoma has been known for elite offense.

And Venables knows that's what the Sooners need.

At this point in the offseason program, the Oklahoma offense is on its way to returning to expectation.

Weve got to get back to the standard of playing the offense thats been here for a long, long time, Venables said.

That is the standard.

So, anything below that would be a disappointment.

But youve got to take your next step, your first step, and Im really excited about how weve gotten the plane off the ground."Contact/Follow us @SoonersWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Oklahoma news, notes, and opinions. You can also follow John on X @john9williams.This article originally appeared on Sooners Wire: Oklahoma Sooners offense ready to return to expectations.
