Proposed T.J. Watt trade adds 5-time All-Pro to upstart NFC Super Bowl contender | Sporting News

While it was assumed that the Pittsburgh Steelers and star edge rusher T.J.
Watt would work out a contract extension this offseason, it doesn't appear that things are going smoothly between the two sides.
Earlier this week, Watt made a cryptic post to Instagram that led many to believe he isn't happy with the current state of things, and that was backed up by Steelers beat reporter Mark Kaboly, who reported that there was indeed meaning behind Watt's post.
"After talking to people, I'd keep an eye on this Steelers T.J.
Watt contract situation moving forward a little more closely.
"It doesn't appear that the [Instagram] picture (below) he posted yesterday was just by chance.
I'd imagine an extension is still going to eventually get done, but the price tag just might be a tad bit higher than some anticipated," Kaboly wrote.
On top of his dissatisfaction with his contract situation, Watt may also be frustrated about the Aaron Rodgers waiting game, as NFL Network's Tom Pelissero noted while sitting in for Rich Eisen on his show during the week.
"I would fairly tell you TJ Watt probably is getting a little sick of waiting on the quarterback question as well," said Pelissero.
Watt's post is now igniting trade speculation, and Steelers Wire's Curt Popejoy went on to pick possible landing spots if the Steelers do trade their best player.
Among the teams to make the list was the Washington Commanders, who are fresh off a season in which they made an unexpected trip to the NFC Championship Game.
Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp "The Commanders' offense improved by leaps and bounds this offseason, but the team has a glaring weakness edge rusher.
Watt deserves a chance to compete for a Super Bowl on a competitive roster, and Washington offers just that," Popejoy wrote.
The loss of Dante Fowler Jr.
in free agency has left the Commanders with a void on the edge and 10.5 sacks to replace.
Safe to say, adding one of the elite edge rushers in the NFL would be a fantastic replacement and an upgrade for Washington.
Watt had 11.5 sacks last season, which was a down year for him, but that total would've been tops on the Commanders.
Assuming he's actually put on the trade block, Washington might be able to snag Watt using its No.
29 overall pick in this year's draft.
From there, the Commanders would have to extend Watt on a contract that could pay him upwards of $40 million annually.
Washington has a great cap space situation over the next few years, so the team can afford it.
The Commanders took a massive leap forward in the first year with Jayden Daniels and now it's all about stocking up to make a run at the Super Bowl in 2025.
Acquiring Watt is exactly the kind of move Washington needs.
