Alex Ovechkin made history against the Chicago Blackhawks on April 4, 2025.

Ovechkin scored his 893rd and 894th goals to tie Wayne Gretzky's all-time record for scoring.

The Capitals won 5-3 and had an opportunity to allow Ovechkin to complete the hat trick and break the record by scoring on an empty net.

However, Ovechkin did not want to break the all-time record without a goaltender in the net.

The Hawks owned 44% of shot attempts and 46% of expected goals.

Those numbers aren't great, but considering the kind of team the Capitals are, the Hawks held their own.

The first period was their best as it was mostly even in terms of possession.

Once Connor Murphy scored an "own-goal" (preventing Ovechkin from scoring his second goal of the night), the Hawks let the Capitals dictate the game.

Oliver Moore scored his first NHL point and tallied a two-point night.

He assisted on Frank Nazar's incredible goal and Philipp Kurashev's seventh goal of the season.

Moore recorded two shots on goal and two shot attempts.

While his advanced stats don't fully capture his performance, Moore had an excellent night.

The kid is fast and played a key role on the third line.

Nazar's goal is an impressive display of his release.

I've joked about how Nazar is fast and has had issues finishing, alluding to certain Blackhawks of the past who did the same.

But his goal shows why Nazar is different and should erase doubts, if any.

Nazar is skilled and reads the game at an elite level.

He had four scoring chances, five shot attempts, three shots on goal, and two points.

Nazar also had a 63 Corsi and a 76 xG%.

Moore to Nazar gives the Hawks a 2-1 lead in the second.

pic.twitter.com/MSMBwJQ6Kz Connor Bedard's line owned the majority of shot attempts when they were on the ice but struggled to make any of their chances high-quality.

His line with Ryan Donato and Ilya Mikheyev had a 54 Corsi and a 14 xG%.

Bedard had three shots on goal and five shot attempts.

Landon Slaggert's night deserves recognition.

Slaggert had two assists, three shot attempts, and three scoring chances.

Much like his linemates Moore and Kurashev, his advanced statistics are lacking.

However, it would be worthwhile to keep Moore and Slaggert together on the same line to see what they can create.

They should form your third-line staples for the remainder of the season.

Unless we want to try Moore on Nazar's wing; now that would be fun.

Overall, it was a solid effort from the Blackhawks, who showed class by lining up to shake Ovechkin's hand.

This game was great for the sport, and it was nice to see the young players playing their hearts out.

Spencer Knight, who finished with an .862 SV%, perhaps embodied that spirit the best.

Knight was locked in against Ovechkin, who had four shot attempts in the final 80 seconds.

The Blackhawks enter their last full week of the regular season as they host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, April 6, at 5 pm CT.
