Giancarlo Stanton hasn't gotten much good news these days.

The Yankees slugger hasn't been able to swing a bat for a couple months due to "severe pain" in both elbows.

He also encountered a calf problem midway through spring training.

And now, New York is being honest about the hopes for Stanton this season.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said this: "We're all hopeful that we can get him back him down the line, but that's not in the near term." There was a hope for a Memorial Day return at some point, but that might fit under near term and be out of the picture, too.

A bizarre theory emerged on Friday that Stanton made a bat switch late last season that contributed to his elbow problems.

Stanton also crushed home runs all postseason, so it's hard to say whether that has any legs.

Regardless, it sounds like Stanton is staying in the dugout for a while.
