Spurs Add Jameer Nelson Jr. To Camp Roster

The Spurs are bringing the son of a longtime NBA point guard to training camp.

That would be none other than Jameer Nelson Jr., per Paul Garcia of The Spot Up Shot Substack newsletter.

As Garcia noted, Nelson Jr.

is also listed on the official camp roster on the teams website .

He likely received an Exhibit 10 deal, making him eligible for a bonus should he remain with the Austin Spurs of the G League.

Nelson is the son of a father of the same name who is mostly known for being a longtime point guard with the Magic and a starter on the 2009 NBA Finals team.

That squad also featured Dwight Howard and was coached by Stan Van Gundy.

This Nelson, of course, is trying to make his own name.

He went undrafted out of TCU in June, having also played college ball at George Washington and Delaware.

As a super-senior last season, he averaged 11.2 points, 3.3 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 steals in 34 games.

He signed with San Antonio for Summer League, appearing in a total of eight games between California and Las Vegas.

The Spurs clearly were impressed enough to give him a longer look.

They currently have a full 21-man camp roster.

Recalling the games where I watched Nelson Jr.

in Summer League, he wasnt usually one of the main point guards in the rotation, with Stephon Castle getting early point guard duties, and then former Spur Jamaree Bouyea running the point for the rest of Summer League, Garcia wrote .

An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed minimum-salary deal.

It doesnt count toward a teams cap unless the player makes the final roster.

It also can be converted to a two-way deal before the season begins or mean guaranteed money if a player is waived and then stays on the G League club for at least 60 days.
