It happens: Joseph lets slip an expletive during news conference

CLEVELAND For a movie to maintain its PG-13 rating, the Motion Picture Association of America allows no more than one F-word during a feature-length film.

Thursdays Lobos news conference met those minimum standards.

Barely.

One more bad word and it would have been pushed into an R rating.

To be fair, English is not Nelly Junior Josephs first language.

A native of Nigeria, he is still learning the nuances of Americanized subtext.

Subtle transitions from one thought to another are filled with, well, filler words.

When asked about a possible mismatch in the block against Marquettes low post players in Fridays first-round South Region game in Cleveland, the New Mexico center did his best to lay it out there.

He finished with a barely audible but clearly stated curse word.

I feel like I just have to, like, be able to, like, talking, whenever they pass the ball to me I just got to finish every time and play hard and, because theyre going to be physical as [expletive], Joseph said.

So I gotta be ready for that.

Hes not the first Lobo to get extra talky in front of a microphone.

Lobos guard Filip Borovicanin, a junior from Serbia who, like Nelly, also speaks with a heavy accent, dropped a similar F-bomb during a radio interview on KKOB-AM earlier this season.

No, it wasnt a hint: During UNMs shootaround Thursday afternoon, Lobo Louie showed up wearing the teams turquoise alternate uniform.

Was it a sign of what the Lobos would be wearing in Fridays game? Nope.

Chalk it up to a wardrobe malfunction.

A team spokesman said UNM will wear its standard cherry red uniform.

Theres no rule against the team wearing turquoise its just a team decision to wear red.

Two uniforms that cant be worn at any point during the tournament are the Lobos yellow statehood alternates and the 1977-78 throwbacks the team wore against Utah State in February.

Neither conforms to the NCAA uniform codes for the tournament, which states no vertical lettering is allowed (sorry throwbacks) and coloring that must match the schools primary look (turquoise is fine, all yellow with a Zia symbol on the chest with smaller numbers in front is not).

The master speaks: Michigan States Tom Izzo drew the largest media gathering at Thursdays eight press conferences for teams representing the South and East regions.

The Spartans won the schools second (and most recent) national championship in 2000.

They started that tournament with a pair of wins in Cleveland.

Yeah, I got the same socks, underwear and hat on, but other than that no, you know, it was interesting, Izzo said when asked if he was superstitious about returning to where it all started.

I called one of my former assistants who's now with the Phoenix Suns, and he said, we started in Cleveland.

Just a matter of time? Rocket Arena is the spacious home of the NBAs Cleveland Cavaliers.

Its not quite the house built by LeBron, but it may as well be.

The arena opened in 1994 and served as the cornerstone of the Gateway Sports and Entertainment Complex that featured the baseball stadium, now known as Progressive Field, thats home to the Cleveland Guardians.

Ask anyone who the most famous Cavalier of all time is and the answer is easy.

LeBron James was drafted by the Cavs in 2003 and played in Cleveland through 2010 when he famously took his talents to South Beach and played four seasons with the Miami Heat.

He returned to Cleveland in 2014, leading the Cavs to four straight finals appearances and the 2015-16 NBA title.

It would be unprecedented for an NBA team to retire the number of an active player on another team, which explains why LeBrons name hasnt risen to the rafters like Nate Thurmond, Larry Nance, Mark Price, Brad Daugherty, Bingo Smith, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Austin Carr.

Similarly, he is not mentioned on the teams wall of fame just inside the arenas main entrance.
