2025 Preview: White Sox

Photo by Chris Bernacchi/Diamond Images via Getty Images Its gotta get better at some point, right? Its been a brutal few weeks for the Yankees, between the ever-unclear Giancarlo Stanton health status, Luis Gil on the shelf for three months, and of course Gerrit Cole.
Ill admit the excitement of Opening Day has been tarnished to a certain level by the injury trifecta.Well Yankee fans, it can always be worse! The Chicago White Sox were arguably the single-worst single-season team of all time in 2024, losing more games than any team in MLB history.
They are projected to be better than that in 2025, merely losers of 99 games.Chicago White Sox2024 record: 41-121 (5th AL Central)FanGraphs 2025 Projection: 63-99 (5th AL Central)Really, a 22 win improvement is a small miracle even if it still leaves you in last place, but its also important to remember that projections are conservative in all ways.
The same way a projection system will have trouble reconciling Aaron Judges performance you cant possibly run multiple 200 wRC+ seasons after you turn 30, can you? itll have trouble reconciling just how bad the White Sox were.
Any kind of historically notable performance kinda breaks projection systems, so Ill take the under on 63 pegged wins for the ChiSox.
The lineup might be a little better than last year, with a few more guys who look like possible league-average hitters.
Luis Robert Jr.
is entering his contract year, will turn 28 in August and is coming off his worst professional season.
A hip flexor strain early in the season cost the center fielder two months of play, and its well within the realm of possibility that injury lingered for most of the year:I tend to think when every part of a players game gets worse in one year, thats an injury issue.
Players dont really forget how to play, and for someone like Robert that seems to want to be traded, playing through pain isnt hard to imagine even if it hurt his final trade value.Andrew Vaughn is also still around, and Ill draft him in the late rounds of fantasy thinking hell be slightly better than hell really be, and he wont exactly disappoint anyone but he wont really do anything crazy. To call the starting rotation of this team anonymous is something of a compliment.
Martin Perez is a name that I recognize even if he isnt that good anymore, but the rest of this crew is just who? Sean Burke could be good I suppose! If nothing else, fans on the South Side have the possibility of once again cheering for Mike Clevinger to look forward to, as the troubled reliever finds himself back in Chicago as an NRI in this springs camp. This is a really bad baseball team, and White Sox fans deserve better than this roster and certainly better than current ownership.
They play in the coolest city in America, they have one of the coolest uniforms, and they should be better.
They likely wont be the worst team of all-time, but thats small potatoes at the end of the year..
