Orioles roster moves: Top prospects Coby Mayo, Samuel Basallo cut from spring roster

SARASOTA, Fla.
Coby Mayo entered spring training with a slim chance of making the Orioles opening day roster. As that hit zero Tuesday, Mayo was honest about the difficulty of starting the season in Triple-A, a level hes already proven hes too good for.
Mayo, the Orioles No.
2 prospect, was one of seven players cut from the Orioles spring training roster Tuesday as the club prepares for opening day March 27 in Toronto. It obviously sucks because you feel like youve proved everything youve needed to [there], he said after he cleaned out his locker.
Sometimes it doesnt feel like its quite enough. Also on the list of cuts was top prospect Samuel Basallo, who at 20 years old wasnt expected to make the roster.Still, Basallo, the best catching prospect in baseball, impressed with his mammoth homers and maturity throughout spring training. Also reassigned to minor league camp Tuesday were outfielder Daz Cameron, utilityman Nick Gordon and right-hangers Corbin Martin, Levi Stoudt and Thaddeus Ward.
Mayo was optioned, not reassigned, because he is on the Orioles 40-man roster.Mayo could be the next man up on the infield, though his performance at Triple-A might dictate that.
The slugger has dominated the level, but he struggled mightily during a brief stint in the majors last summer.
He opened camp 1-for-23 before ending it strong with hits in seven of his final 19 at-bats.You go back there and if you have success its, Oh, well hes supposed to have success because hes already proved it, Mayo said.
And if he doesnt have success its, Oh, well obviously hes fallen off.Its kind of a lose-lose going to Norfolk, so, yeah. This article will be updated.
