NFL executives differ on how Giants would react to missing out on Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders

As much as the New York Giants may want to move up from the third overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft to the No.
1 spot in an attempt to fix their quarterback situation, the Tennessee Titans (selection No.
1) and Cleveland Browns (No.
2) could hold onto their draft assets to ensure that neither Miami's Cam Ward nor Colorado's Shedeur Sanders ends up with Big Blue.
In a mock draft published on Wednesday, Mike Sando of The Athletic revealed that some NFL executives are split on whether the Giants would take Penn State pass-rusher Abdul Carter or Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter in the event that neither Ward nor Sanders are on the board at No.
3.
"You can never have enough rushers," one executive explained about mocking Carter to the Giants.
"Ask [the Philadelphia Eagles]." As John Dillon noted for Chiefs Wire/USA Today, the Eagles pressured Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes 16 times and recorded six sacks in the 40-22 Super Bowl LIX win.
Adding Carter to a defense that features Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns could give the Giants a fearsome defensive front, but a different executive suggested that the club passing on Hunter in this scenario would be silly.
"They have two rushers in Thibodeaux and Burns who are the same position, the same style, the same everything.
I cant imagine having three of those," that executive said about the Giants possibly drafting Carter with the third pick.
In late February, ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr.
listed Hunter as the top overall prospect in this year's draft class.
During a recent chat with Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, CBS Sports analyst and Football Gameplan founder Emory Hunt raved about Hunter's two-way talent.
"If hes at corner, youre literally throwing at a wide receiver," Hunt said about Hunter.
"Why are you throwing his way? Hes got better hands than your receiver.
So hes gonna take away one half of the field, and then on offense, he doesnt need volume.
You dont have to force-feed him, and hell still have five or six catches a game and a touchdown." The Giants are expected to sign a "placeholder" quarterback such as Russell Wilson of the Pittsburgh Steelers or Aaron Rodgers of the New York Jets at some point after the new league year begins on March 12.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen will likely want a veteran to mentor either Ward or Sanders, but Schoen also can't afford to make a "'Godfather' offer" type of trade to land either of those prospects.
"[Lead draft analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic] said that even the top QB in this class, Cam Ward, wouldnt be ranked higher than maybe fifth or sixth in last years class," The Athletic's Mike DeFabo shared on Wednesday.
"Next years quarterback class which could include the much-hyped Arch Manning is considered much stronger." Zac Wassink is a longtime sports news writer and PFWA member who began his career in 2006 and has had his work featured on Yardbarker, MSN, Yahoo Sports and Bleacher Report.
