Dallas Cowboys 2025 NFL free agency grades: The Jones-led front office shows its true colors yet again with first wave of moves

Let's start with a disclaimer: The Dallas Cowboys' free agency is not done.
More signings are almost surely going to follow, even if it's just small impact moves.
Trades could also be on the table based on comments made by both Jerry and Stephen Jones.
However, we'll grade each of the signings so far individually before diving into an overview of how things are going for Dallas.
So how are the Cowboys faring in this "selectively aggressive" free agency? Let's dive in.
DE Payton Turner: B- Contract: One-year deal worth $3 million This is the classic Cowboys case of making a low-risk, high-reward bet .
Turner is a great athlete that was looked as a prospect with high upside when he was drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
That hasn't quite translated to Sundays though and injuries have been an issue throughout his four-year careers.
He's missed 31 of a possible 68 games and that's counting a 16-game season in 2024.
It's an inexpensive signing of a player that will likely be nothing but depth.
Best case scenario, he finally exploits the athleticism he displayed in his college football days.
It's just an unlikely scenario in Year 5 of his career.
DT Solomon Thomas: B Contract: Two-year deal worth up to $8 million Thomas isn't going to start over Osa Odighizuwa and yet, it's the Cowboys' best signing so far.
Thomas is coming off of the best two-year stretch of his career in the pass rushing department and by arriving at Dallas, he's reuniting with DL coach Aaron Whitecotton.
Outside of Osa and Mazi Smith at the nose tackle spot, the Cowboys had no proven interior defensive linemen.
Thomas solves that and his deal is a pretty manageable one, too.
Good work from Dallas here.
RB Javonte Williams: C- Contract: One-year deal worth $3 million I just can't get behind this one.
The Cowboys are likely turning away from Rico Dowdle after signing Williams and it's a huge downgrade.
Williams hasn't averaged over four yards per carry since his rookie season, excluding his second year in the league when he only played four games before tearing three ligaments on his knee.
This just feels like a signing where finances came before football.
OL Rob Jones: C Contract: One-year deal worth up to $4.5 million Jones has been banged up but comes with solid reviews from the Miami Dolphins ' sphere.
He will be a backup guard for the Cowboys and likely get a chance to compete with Brock Hoffman for the right guard spot.
But there's a very real scenario where T.J.
Bass beats Jones for the swing guard position even.
I can't hate on offensive line depth but this one doesn't move the needle all that much.
Overall grade: C- The above signings paired with the fact that the Cowboys lost Jourdan Lewis and Chauncey Golston to free agency makes this a C- free agency for me so far and I'd argue you could go lower.
Simply put, the roster is getting worse.
As Jerry Jones foreshadowed last week, they haven't filled any voids other than making moves for depth.
Meanwhile, Dallas is down a starting nickel cornerback and a starting edge rusher.
Rico Dowdle, Brandin Cooks, and DeMarcus Lawrence are likely to follow.
We'll see if they can bounce back over the next few weeks.
But at the end of the day, it's hard to bet on it.
The Cowboys told us they weren't going to be aggressive this offseason.
Once again, finances are taking a priority over improving the football team.
These are the front office's true colors and it shouldn't be a surprise.
