Edgewater reaches out of state for new football coach Patrick Browning

After a lengthy search Edgewater High has finally hired a replacement for departing head football coach Cameron Duke .
Athletic director Josh Vandergrift acknowledged Tuesday night that Edgewater has hired Patrick Browning, a former Alabama high school coach who most recently has spent time at the college level as an assistant coach at both Alabama State and Prairie View A&M, where he was co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2024 season.
There have been nine other schools who have named new head coaches for football during this offseason: Freedom, Foundation Academy, Lake Brantley, Lake Minneola, Leesburg, Masters Academy, Deltona Pine Ridge and Orange City University.
Cypress Creek has yet to name a replacement for Ryan Mills, who left to be head coach at Davenport.
The Sentinel previously reported that former Masters Academy coach Garrett Kruczek has taken over at Lake Brantley , while former Evans, University of Miami and NFL great Kenard Lang is now at Leesburg .
Lang was previously head coach at Jones, Wekiva and Evans.
Most recently he was D-line coach at North Carolina A&T.
Also, former Lake Minneola offensive line coach Abre Leggins, who played at UCF, has been promoted to head coach for the Hawks .
Edgewaters new coach was previously at Alabama State for one season, after guiding Pike Road (Ala.) High to a 42-7 record in four seasons, including a 14-0 Alabama state championship run in 2022.
Browning has a tough challenge ahead in replacing Duke, who resigned in January to take a similar position at Marietta High in Georgia.
Duke took Edgewater, which was 0-10 the year before he accepted the position, and turned the Eagles into a perennial state power in his 8 seasons, going 84-16, and making appearances in two state championship games.
Edgewater had 28 consecutive regular seasons wins 2021-23.
Elsewhere, Orange City University has hired Matt Trumbly, a longtime assistant at University.
Trumbly replaces Justin Roberts, who has moved on to pursue some personal ventures after resigning in January.
Trumbly played at Deltona High and has 14 years of coaching experience.
University made two straight playoff appearances under Roberts.
Masters Academy brought back former coach Bailey Granier, who was previously head coach at Masters for the 2021-22 seasons, going 4-5 and 5-4.
Masters is coming off back-to-back Sunshine State Athletic Association state championships under former coach Kruczek.
Foundation Academy has hired Daniel D.J.
White, who played at Apopka High.
White played collegiately at UAB.
After receiving his masters degree at Wagner College, where he was a defensive graduate assistant, coaching linebackers.
He was also assistant coach at Morehead State University and Delaware State.
He replaces Andre Walker, who was 12-8 in two seasons at the helm.
Freedom has hired Brandon Pennington, who replaces Joe Saragusa.
Pennington was formerly a head coach at Liberty and also had stints at St.
Cloud and Lake Buena Vista.
Freedom was 1-9 last season.
Deltona Pine Ridge has hired Alex Russell to replace Greg Miller, who stepped down after one season.
The team went 1-8.
Russell played collegiately at Methodist University.
