Russell Wilson urged to retire from NFL with Steelers set to move on from QB

Russell Wilson has been advised to consider retiring from the NFL, with the veteran quarterback hitting free agency this offseason.
The 36-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks of his generation after winning Super Bowl XLVIII with the Seattle Seahawks and earning 10 Pro Bowl invites.
But his one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers is about to expire.
Pittsburgh is being tipped to move on from Wilson, leaving him searching for a new job in the league.
The Steelers are expected to revamp their quarterback department this offseason, with Justin Fields also hitting free agency after signing a one-year deal in 2024.
ESPN's Dan Graziano believes Wilson should consider hanging up his cleats.
"I dont think its the worst idea (retiring)," Graziano told Get Up .
"Hes made over $300 million in salary playing NFL football.
Certainly got plenty he can do after his career.
"The last three years have gone poorly, I just don't get it.
I think he still feels like he has something to prove, I'm just not sure if he has the ability left to prove it." Yet Graziano also said he'd be "stunned" if Wilson actually did retire this offseason.
Wilson, who played college football for NC State and Wisconsin, has achieved plenty in professional football since being selected in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Seahawks.
He was the NFL's passer rating leader in 2015 and passing touchdowns leader in 2017, and he was named as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2020.
Wilson spent 10 years as the starter in Seattle before being traded to the Denver Broncos ahead of the 2022 season.
His two years in Colorado were unsuccessful, with the Broncos failing to reach the playoffs or record a winning season in either campaign.
Wilson was released by Denver and picked up by Pittsburgh ahead of the 2024 season.
He missed the first six games of the campaign through injury before replacing Fields and leading the Steelers to the playoffs to earn his first Pro Bowl nod since 2021.
Despite showing plenty of promise, Pittsburgh's campaign soon unraveled with Wilson under center.
The Steelers lost their last four regular season games before suffering a 28-14 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
Pittsburgh's poor end to the season, plus Wilson's contractual situation, has cast doubt over his return to Pennsylvania in 2025.
FOX's NFL insider Jay Glazer was asked at Super Bowl LIX whether Wilson will sign for the Steelers or the Las Vegas Raiders.
"That aint gonna happen," Glazer said about Wilson moving to Las Vegas.
"That one is over.
I dont think thats gonna happen, either (a return to Pittsburgh).
I think youll see a new start for Russell somewhere.".
