LEE: Auburn football needs an influx of common sense

The offense is bad.
Change it.
Do we understand that? The offense is bad.
Change it.
Is that so disagreeable? Is that so difficult? Weve all got that, right? We shouldnt need to type that out anymore, right? The RPO passes go off the receivers hands and they get intercepted.
So dont do it, right? Youre throwing interceptions no matter who the quarterback is, so throw less, right? Somehow, someway, Hugh Freeze still disagrees.
Somehow, someway, in another post-game press conference Saturday, he said he doesnt think scheme is the problem, that this offense works in the face of all this evidence to the contrary, that all the change is needed outside his office.
Freeze hates interceptions, says you cant win with them, yet the offense he runs yielded an SEC-worst 13 interceptions thrown last season, it yielded a 118th-in-the-country 15 at Liberty in 2022, and it yielded a 116th-in-the-country 15 at Liberty in 2021.
The common thread through all 41 of these interceptions is not a quarterback, not a school, but what Freeze is doing.
To be blunt, the head coach needs a dose of common sense.
To put it more gingerly, Freeze needs help.
He needs to ask for help.
He needs to pull from other coaches he knows, he needs to pull from other offenses he sees, and he needs everyone to see that hes willing to change, hes willing to compromise, and hes willing to work together with Auburn to get out of this hole.
Heres a little more common sense for Auburn football: Take the frozen winter gimmicks off the videos and off the graphics until he proves something.
Heres a little more common sense for Auburn football: Dont hand coaches contracts with 75% guaranteed.
Dont hand any of your employees $29 million up front and expect for kicks and giggles.
Stop making silly, simple, avoidable mistakes.
Thats the story in the locker room right now.
Thats the story in the headset right now.
Thats the story in the administrative offices right now.
It makes no sense for Freeze to keep doing what hes doing.
It makes no sense for the university to re-brand the football program all around one person and go up and down with that one person.
Freeze can still get out of this mess.
Believe it or not, even this jaded columnist sees a way.
But its not going to be Freeze University that digs out of the hole.
Its going to be Auburn, and an influx of common sense, and an influx of humility and compromise, thats going to turn this around.
Theres that old adage: Play for the name on the front of the jersey and not the name on the back.
Is that too much to ask? Seems like common sense.
