Former Celtics guard reportedly returning to NBA, joining Boston rival

After four months in Europe, Lonnie Walker IV is headed back to the NBA.Walker agreed to terms on a two-year, $3 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, his agent told ESPNs Shams Charania on Tuesday, ending his stint with Zalgiris Kaunas in the EuroLeague.The 26-year-old shooting guard signed with the Lithuanian club after a failed tryout with the Celtics this past preseason.

Boston chose to enter the season with one open roster spot rather than retain Walker, whos appeared in 322 career games across stints with the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs.Charanias report came hours after Marc Stein of The Stein Line Substack reported, also citing Walkers agent, that the player planned to remain with Zalgiris and pursue an NBA return next season.

Walkers window to opt out of his contract and sign with an NBA team reportedly was set to end Tuesday.Walker appeared in 19 EuroLeague games for Zalgiris, averaging 13.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 38.7% from the field and 33.1% from 3-point range.If Walker promptly joins Philadelphias roster, his first game back in the NBA could come against his former team.

The Celtics are set to visit the 76ers on Thursday in both teams first game following the NBA All-Star break.The Sixers also employ another ex-Celtic who returned to the NBA after a stint in Europe: forward Guerschon Yabusele, who scored 21 points in Phillys 118-110 loss to Boston on Feb.
