Mac McClung shows true colors with 'imposter' remarks before shot at NBA Slam Dunk history

Mac McClung headed to San Francisco for the 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend ready to defend his Slam Dunk Contest crown again.
But he didn't necessarily understand what his third straight win in the prestigious All-Star Saturday event would entail.
A victory would see the 6-foot-2 guard tie Nate Robinson for the most triumphs in the prestigious event and become the only player ever to do it in consecutive years.
It would mean he earned more Slam Dunk titles that Michael Jordan or Dominique Wilkins.
"It just sounds insane," McClung said when told about what's at stake "I feel like an imposter.
I don't know.
I hadn't even thought of it.
If that happens, then I'll be totally in shock.
So it's hard to even grasp that." McClung scored a perfect 50 on all but one of his dunks as he claimed victory over New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III in 2023, wrapping up with a 360-plus slam in his last attempt.
The following year, he leaped over the 7-foot-1 NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal to beat Jaylen Brown in the final.
The difficulty of the Slam Dunk contest increases with each edition, let alone individual appearance.
After all, there's a finite number of ways one can dunk the ball, so keeping things fresh and original becomes a challenge.
And McClung is well aware of it.
"I've been preparing for a long time," the Orlando Magic and Osceola Magic player said.
"This is probably the most challenging one, and I'm excited." Expect props to be part of his display.
"I can't tell you what, but there's more props this year than I've probably used in my dunk contest career," McClung said.
"This year, we probably took the most time trying to be creative, so hopefully, it pays off." Asked by Mirror U.S.
Sports where he finds inspiration to add to his dunk repertoire, McClung said said he takes a lot of joy in the process.
"Really just because it's fun to do," he said.
"It's a thing that I enjoy doing, and if I didn't love it, I wouldn't be able to do it.
So I think just the love of it helps me kind of create things." McClung did suggest that the 2025 edition of the Slam Dunk Contest will be his last.
He will compete against Chicago Bulls forward Matas Buzelis, San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle, and Milwaukee Bucks guard Andre Jackson Jr in San Francisco..
