Braves trying to determine if Austin Riley can return

With Ozzie Albies returning last night, the Braves had a golden opportunity to build some momentum in the Wild Card race as the Mets lost to the Phillies.
However, the Marlins would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first, and despite the Braves having every opportunity to tie the game, they fell just one run shy and remain two games back of New York with eight games to play.
Atlanta is running out of time.
With each passing day, its looking more and more likely theyll miss the postseason for the first time since 2017.
Which is especially discouraging, because they could have a few key pieces return for October if they can somehow sneak their way into the playoffs.
According to Brian Snitker , Austin Riley will have a CT scan on his fractured wrist Monday, which will dictate if he can remove his cast.
Austin Riley is due for a CT scan Monday, and the result could dictate whether he can get his cast off.
You know Riley hes hoping to be back in time for the postseason, should the Braves make it.
The fracture was to the base of his hamate on his right hand.
Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) September 20, 2024 Theres virtually no way Riley will be able to return before the playoffs, but its very possible hes ready for a potential Wild Card series if the Braves can finish strong without him.
Along with Riley, Reynaldo Lopez is also hoping to come back from some shoulder soreness.
Reynaldo Lopez played catch today.
The next step is long toss.
Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) September 20, 2024 Technically, Lopez is eligible to come off the IL before the end of the regular season, but that doesnt seem likely.
A return during October, however, does seem to be on the table.
Despite being two games back with just eight games to play, the Braves do get a chance to play the Mets head-to-head at Truist Park one final time to begin next week.
Thats about the only thing this club has left to hang its hat on.
Win that series, and theyll have a chance to extend their playoff streak to seven years.
