The Pittsburgh Steelers face a bit of a crossroads this offseason do they keep trying to compete with what they have, or do they embrace the rebuild ? Their approach to free agency will likely reveal more information about the path they expect to take in 2025.

While they have plenty of cap space to make some splash moves, the first order of business is to re-sign some in-house free agents.

There are three Steelers free agents who the team should re-sign when free agency opens.

Top 3 Steelers Free Agents Who Should Be Re-Signed RG James Daniels This list gets kicked off with its most controversial entry.

James Daniels has been the Steelers best offensive lineman in his three years with the team.

Unfortunately, his 2024 campaign ended after just four games due to a torn Achilles.

An injury of that caliber is undoubtedly a scary one, especially for an offensive lineman.

However, Daniels is only 27 years old.

Further, Spotrac projects his market value at $7.8 million per year.

The Steelers can afford that contract with ease and if Daniels makes a full recovery, that price would be a bargain.

Daniels isnt expected to be re-signed by the Steelers, partially because 2024 rookie Mason McCormick did a decent job in his place.

While McCormick was solid, especially for a rookie, he was not a better player than a healthy Daniels will be.

Pittsburgh could re-sign Daniels, make McCormick the top backup at both guard spots, and plan for him to replace Isaac Seumalo at left guard in 2026.

McCormick played exclusively at left guard in college, so the switch would be no problem for him.

Pairing Seumalo and Daniels together is the Steelers best option in 2025, while McCormick is a good piece to have for the future.

QB Justin Fields The Steelers quarterback situation has been one of the offseasons most talked-about topics , with both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson set to be free agents.

While Wilson took over for Fields as the starter after six games last season, it should be a no-brainer for Pittsburgh to ride into 2025 with Fields under center.

As previously mentioned, the Steelers are stuck between trying to compete and rebuilding.

Fields is the right quarterback for that situation because he is a fine option in either scenario.

If Pittsburgh wants to win in 2025, they can do it with Fields; they went 4-2 in his six games as the starter in 2024.

And if they are looking to the future, the Steelers should get a season-long look at Fields before making any franchise-altering decisions.

Hell be 26 years old when the season starts, so Fields still has plenty of football ahead of him.

While he was underwhelming in his first year as the Steelers offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith did a good job with Fields in 2024.

The young quarterback made considerable improvements under Smith, especially in the ball security and decision-making aspects of his game.

If Fields can continue to take strides and grow as a player, he has the tools to be a franchise quarterback.

Pittsburgh will only figure that out by handing him the reigns in 2025.

LB Elandon Roberts There are conversations to be had about most of the Steelers pending free agents, but there shouldnt be much discussion around Elandon Roberts.

Of the 20+ Steelers free agents, Roberts is perhaps the most obvious candidate to be re-signed.

Roberts really came on down the stretch of the 2023 season.

Known mostly as a run-stopper, he was dominant in all aspects of the game during that stretch.

The momentum carried over into 2024, as Roberts was once again sensational.

The Steelers may have struck gold when they drafted Payton Wilson late in the third round of the 2024 draft.

Wilson has all the tools to be a cornerstone of Pittsburghs defense for a long time.

Wilson is a do-it-all linebacker who can stop the run and excel in pass coverage, while Roberts does his best work in the run game.

Despite Patrick Queen being their highest-paid linebacker, Roberts and Wilson complement each other perfectly and should see the field together much more in 2025.
