Super Bowl viewers only just realizing why Kansas City Chiefs mascot is a wolf

While Kansas City's football team are named the Chiefs, their mascot has been a wolf for the past three decades - something that has left many fans confused.
In 1990, the Chiefs debuted a new mascot in KC Wolf, which had been chosen by group of fans from the area, after he moved on from their former mascot, Warpaint.
Warpaint had been an individual in Native American-style dressing, riding a horse across the field, before being retired in 1989.
The Chiefs brought back Warpaint in 2009, who had been another mascot with KC Wolf up until 2021 when it was retired again.
While no official reason was announced for retiring Warpaint, it is believed that the Chiefs wanted to distance themselves to the Native American imagery, which had long offended many with the Washington Redskins now named the Commanders .
The man under the mask of KC Wolf, Dan Meers, has been the mascot ever since 1990 - being with the team for more than three decades - being inducted to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.
Meers' backstory had been reported on this week, on his quick rise to becoming a mascot while having no experience and struggling athletically through his time in college.
And while many had enjoyed reading his story, dozens of fans had same the same thing.

KC Wolf has been a figure at five of the last six Super Bowl's with the Chiefs in the midst of one of the most dominant periods in NFL history.
The Chiefs come into the Super Bowl on the back of winning back-to-back championships as they look to become the first ever to win three-in-a-row.
They are a slight favorites over the Philadelphia Eagles, despite many believing the latter to have the strong roster on paper.
