SHELTON Sheltons girls basketball team has gotten used to playing in the Twin Valley Conference championship game in recent years.

And the Bulldogs are doing just that again this season after a 58-43 victory over Red Cloud in a TVC semifinal game Friday at Shelton High School.

Shelton (19-1) advanced by going on a couple of good runs in a game of runs by both teams.

The Bulldogs got off to a fast start and held a 17-7 lead heading into the second quarter.

They led 21-10 after a basket by Susanna Cheney and later led 25-14 following a free throw by Amaya Morgan.

But then Red Cloud began its comeback.

The Warriors got a 3-pointer from Logan Brown and ended the quarter with three free throws by Allarae Rasser and one by Josie Faimon to pull Red Cloud to within 29-25 at the half.

We had a lot of good confidence going in at halftime being down four and I thought we could play better yet, Red Cloud coach Casey Fangmeyer said.

And then the first three minutes of the third they just sped us up and we had some silly turnovers and we missed some good looks in there.

The third quarter was all Shelton.

The Bulldogs scored 14 points of the quarter to build the lead up to 43-25 with 2:50 left in the quarter.

Red Cloud finally broke the run with a 3-pointer by Carrie Fangmeyer with 2:27 left in the third.

Shelton coach Jeff Thober said the Bulldogs had a simple defensive philosophy in that third quarter.

Dont let your girl be the one that scores is kind of what we were talking about, Thober said.

Our defense helped us get a couple of runs.

The Warriors put together a strong fourth quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 15-12, but it was too little too late.

Unfortunately our good spots were shorter than our bad spots, Fangmeyer said.

A team like that, you just cant go through scoring droughts like that and make silly turnovers because theyre so deep they can take advantage of it.

Junior Erin Gegg and sophomore Gracie Willis led Shelton with 15 points each.

Willis points came on five 3-pointers, including two in the third quarter.

Red Cloud (10-8) was led by Josie Faimon with 13 points and Logan Brown with 10.

Theyre quick and they shoot the ball really well, Thober said of Red Cloud.

They were certainly a challenge.

Theyre tough.

They keep coming at you.

Class D-2 No.

1 Shelton (Omaha World-Herald) will play for the TVC championship at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday at Hastings College against Silver Lake.

Red Cloud will face Blue Hill in the consolation game earlier in the day.

Fangmeyer was asked if it would be tough to bounce back and play a consolation game the next day.

Were going to find out, Fangmeyer said.

I think our kids will be energized to play.

We havent played for that high in conference for a few years.

Silver Lake 45, Blue Hill 44 Sometimes the best laid plans dont work, but you win anyway.

Thats what happened for Silver Lake in the second semifinal.

The Mustangs trailed Blue Hill 44-43 and had the ball when they called timeout with 10.5 seconds left on the clock.

It was supposed to be a screen for MaKenna Karr, Silver Lake coach Kate Sensel said.

Then it went to Katy (Soucek).

We didnt draw it up like that but it worked out.

Soucek missed her first try, but grabbed the rebound and put it in at the buzzer to give Silver Lake the 45-44 win.

That was big for us, staying composed and controlling the things that we could control, Sensel said.

We know Blue Hill has some great shooters and theyre coached really well so we knew what we were up against.

The game was close all the way.

Neither team could open up a lead on the other.

It seemed like anytime we would hit a shot, theyd go down to the other end and have a really good play, Sensel said.

I always tell the girls an ugly win is better than a pretty loss.

Well take it any day.

Sophie Schmidt led Silver Lake with 16 points while Soucek had 10.

Ellie Mangers paced Blue Hill with 14 points.

Avaley Toepfer had 12, including two free throws with 14 seconds left that gave the Bobcats the lead at 44-43.

Now Class D-2 No.

5 Silver Lake has to get refocused to play Shelton on Saturday night in the championship game.

Were going to be exhausted after tonight, Sensel said.

We know they have a ton of shooters.

Were going to have to close out on the shooters and not give them second and third chances.
