Tom Brady played a role in Chip Kelly becoming new Raiders OC

Chip Kelly is going back to the NFL, but this time he's going to be working under someone else and not a head coach.

That's not a new phenomenon for Kelly, who left the head coaching gig at UCLA to be Ryan Day's offensive coordinator at Ohio State last season.

Kelly won a national championship with OSU and now he's going to be working under Pete Carroll as the new offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders.

Kelly has always been an innovative offensive mind, stemming from his time as offensive coordinator at Oregon.

He's been at the forefront of the speed-option offense but at OSU this past season, he proved that his offensive scheme can put numbers up no matter what it looks like.

It helped that the Buckeyes' offense was stacked from top to bottom, but you can't argue with 35.7 points per game and 36.3 points per game in the College Football Playoff en route to a national title.

Kelly's offensive mind is why the Raiders wanted to pair him with the defensive-minded Caroll, and Vegas it reportedly ponying up big-time for the privilege of having Kelly call the plays.

Kelly is going to get $6M per year from the Raiders, and recently speaking on "The Pat McAfee Show", NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed that that the Raiders' new limited ownership is behind that cash.

That includes Tom Brady.

"This is where the new money and the limited owners that the Raiders have come into play because Mark Davis got an infusion of money from the limited owners that included Tom Brady and they now can go out and spend that money on guys like Chip Kelly," Schefter explained ( h/t On3 ).

"Theres no salary cap for coaches.

Youre capped off for what you can and cant spend on players, but theres no cap on coaches.

So, if you want to go pay Chip Kelly $6M a year to bring him into Las Vegas you can go do that, and having cash and the Raiders clearly have some cash that they can throw around on coaches and that theyre going to be able to use in the form of guaranteed money and signing bonuses to upcoming free agents."
