Phoenix Mercury sign 2-time WNBA champion

PHOENIX A new face is headed to the Footprint Center : the Phoenix Mercury have signed two-time WNBA champion Sami Whitcomb for next season.

Whitcomb helped lead the Seattle Storm to two WNBA titles in 2018 and 2020, and she ranks second in WNBA history in threes made off the bench, according to a news release from the Mercury.

Sami is a savvy guard who can spread the floor with her shooting and does all the little things, Mercury general manager Nick URen said in a news release.

Her veteran and championship experience will be a big boost to our team.

The eight-year WNBA veteran joins the Mercury after playing in all 40 games for Seattle, averaging 5 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 15.3 minutes per game, the news release said.

Whitcomb also led the Australian Opals to a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and is a two-time FIBA World Cup medalist and a FIBA Asia Cup bronze medalist.

The Mercury also said goodbye to Brittney Griner after 11 seasons and picked up Dallas Wings forward Satou Sabally.

The Mercury will tip off the 2025 WNBA regular season at home May 17 at 7 p.m.

Arizona sports The city of Phoenix is home to four major professional sports league teams; The NFL's Arizona Cardinals, NBA's Phoenix Suns, WNBAs Phoenix Mercury and MLB's Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Cardinals have made State Farm Stadium in Glendale their home turf and the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix is home to both the Suns and the Mercury.
