The Colorado School of Mines football program needs a head coach again.

Pete Sterbick resigned, the school said Tuesday, to become the offensive coordinator at Montana State.

Sterbick has Montana ties, previously serving as a record-setting offensive coordinator at Montana Tech.

"I would like to thank Pete Sterbick for serving first as our offensive coordinator and then as our head coach for the past six years, athletics director David Hansburg said.

"Pete's contributions have been invaluable to Mines football.

We wish him and his family all the best.

Mines football has developed an unrivaled culture that each coach and player has added to over the years.

We look forward to finding our next head coach who will add to that tradition." Paul Klee: With Colorado School of Mines in NCAA title game, raise a toast to Orediggers original Bob Stitt Coaching searches have been commonplace in Golden lately.

After Bob Stitt built the program into a Division II powerhouse from 2000-14, head coaches Gregg Brandon (2015-21), Brandon Moore (2022) and Sterbick (2023-24) continued the upward trajectory.

Sterbick helped Mines to consecutive national title game appearances in 2022 and 2023, first as offensive coordinator then as head coach.

His 2023 Orediggers went 14-1 and quarterback John Matocha finished as the NCAA leader in touchdown passes.

The Orediggers had 16 All-Americans on offense during Sterbicks stay.

"I have loved being at Mines for the past six years, this is truly an incredible place," Sterbick said.

"The players here make being the head coach at Mines special, and I know whoever is hired as the next head coach will do a great job leading them.

Mines said running backs coach and special teams coordinator Yon Boone will serve as interim coach during the search.

Boone, an adept recruiter in Colorado, has been with the Mines program since 2018.

He previously worked on staffs at Murray State, Lawrence University (Wisc.), Saint Anselm College (N.H.), Eastern Kentucky, Wofford and Ham-line University (Minn.)..
