On January 7, 2025, Maren McGinn secured a spot on the Norwich womens basketball programs 1,000-point banner in the game against Anna Maria College.

McGinn, a senior at Norwich and a graduate of BFA-St.

Albans High School tallied 20 points in the game.

Q&A with Maren McGinn What will you remember most about hitting the 1,000-point milestone? Ill remember my teammates and family all celebrating and being there in that moment.

They were all happy for me, and that hits me the most.

I'll remember that forever.

I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to play here and be supported by my family, college, and hometown community.

Was this something you saw coming in your collegiate career? I didnt see it when I first came to Norwich.

I didn't see myself as a big scorer; I felt like I was more of a role playergetting the rebounds and screens and scoring here and there.

What changed this role for you? When I came to college, my team needed a presence in the post, and that was my rolepost up, score layups, and clean up rebounds.

My coaches taught me how to be that big presence down there.

I took on that role and got good at it.

How have your coaches helped you develop your game over the last four years? They give me tools and drills to help me improve, and I apply them in games.

They give me the confidence to go do it.

All my coaches have believed in me to get the job done, and that's helped me the most.

Maren McGinn's friends and family celebrate her 1,000th point on January 7, 2025.

Was there a celebration at Norwich after you hit the 1,000-point milestone? It was announced at the game that I'd surpassed the 1,000-point mark, and afterward, we had a celebration with cake and treats my family brought, and we took photos.

It was so sweet.

What are your thoughts about being on the Norwich 1,000-point banner? It's very surreal.

After the game, my roommate, also a 1000-point scorer, asked me if I felt any different.

I told her I did; I felt accomplished and proud.

When I came to Norwich and started playing college basketball, I never thought I would hit this milestone.

Seeing this happen and all the hard work pay off is awesome.

Who has been inspirational to you in your basketball career? My mom, Jen, has always been there for me and supported me through my ups and downs.

Even if I have a bad night, she tells me it will be okay, and I can give my all tomorrow.

She's been my inspiration to work hard and to go out and give my best every day.

As an older sister, what do you hope your younger siblings, Marah and Matthew, will learn from you? I want them to learn that if and when they set goals and work hard, anything's possible.

I want them to know they'll always have support and be surrounded by people who want to see them accomplish their goals.

I love going to their games and cheering them on.

It makes me happy to see them happy.

What have you enjoyed about playing basketball for Norwich? Over the years, I've had old and new teammates each year, and they've grown into my best friends and the people I want in my life.

I enjoy being with them daily, both on and off the court.

What are your goals for the remainder of your senior basketball season? I really want us to go to playoffs, and I know we can do it.

We've had some bumps in the road and have some work to do, but I want to see us keep improving every day.

I want to see us come in and be excited to be there every day.

I have 10 games left in my basketball career, and I want to go out with a bang, having had fun doing it all.

How has the game of basketball grown with your life? I started playing in kindergarten, and it's given me many different friends and opportunities.

I've played for many teams and coaches and was taught under different coaching styles.

It's given me a path for something bigger than myself, something that makes me work harder every day for my teammates and coaches.

Playing college basketball has made me a little edgier--I'm not soft; I'm going out to win.

I've got a chip on my shoulder.

It's made me more confident and given me something I wouldn't have had without that energy and desire to go out and be confident in who I am, what I'm doing, and who's around me to inspire.

Do you have any words of wisdom for younger athletes? If you want to play a college sport, whether D1, 2, or 3--go do it.

It's so worth it.

It's brought me so many people and opportunities in life.

I can't imagine my life without it.

It's a lot to balance, but having those people and those memories in my life is worth it..
