Less than 24 hours after winning the national championship with Ohio State , quarterback Devin Brown has signed with California after entering the transfer portal.

Brown was a three-star recruit in 2022 and initially committed to USC , but later signed for the Buckeyes .

Brown sat behind C.J.

Stroud in his first season and then lost the battle for the starting role with Kyle McCord last year.

The 21-year-old always intended to play for Ohio State, but after losing out again once Will Howard signed in 2024, he decided in December it was time to move on.

However, in an attempt to show his loyalty and love for the Buckeyes, he saw out the remainder of their run in the College Football Playoffs before leaving the program.

Brown has two more seasons of eligibility, but has no negativity towards Ohio State despite being given just one start in three years.

"That's just college football," Brown said.

"It never works out the way that anybody really expects it to.

"So last year, dealing with a ton of injuries and not playing as much as I really wanted to, it just kind of fuels you a little more.

It never really got me down in the dumps or anything like that.

I just wanted to keep doing more and more and get back out and prove what I can do." Brown shared meetings with the Buckeyes before announcing his decision to enter the transfer portal, in an attempt to make his leaving process as amicable as possible.

"I just had one-on-one meetings with both of (head coach Ryan Day and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly) and just kind of told them what I was thinking and what I was feeling," Brown said.

"And they just said that was fair." The backup could have left instantly to maximize his options, but felt uncomfortable quitting the team before the season was over.

"In that conversation, I also said I think it's only right that I stay and stick to my word and finish things the right way," Brown added.

"And they (Day and Kelly) agreed because I'm the backup.

And if something happens, they need me to come in and help this team win." Brown was only required for three snaps during the College Football Playoffs, as he entered the field during the blowout win over Tennessee in the first round.

Brown can now call himself a national champion due to his loyalty, and he earned the respect of his head coach also.

"I give Devin credit," Day said in December.

"He wants to finish this thing out the right way.

But he also wants to see what other options are available for his future.

"And I think it's not an easy thing for him to do.

But I give him credit for wanting to finish this thing out the right way." While tasting success is an added bonus, Brown was just happy to experience the CFP run with his teammates.

"It means a lot," Brown said.

"With my brothers here, they have full trust in me to do this thing.

And they know I can do it if I'm needed.

"And even them to let me stay on the team while I'm trying to make some personal decisions, too, I think it just means a lot.

And it kind of shows what I mean to them as well.".
