The summit was created in 2012 to bring more publicity to the print, online and broadcast sports journalism being taught at the school while giving students a chance to hear and meet local, regional and national media professionals.

One of its aspirations at that time was the creation of a sports media center, which came to fruition in 2021 and was named for Smith, who graduated from the school in 1979 and went on to become the first (and only) woman to win the Baseball Writers Association of America Career Excellence Award.

In 2017, she was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Smith is the founding executive director, the former voice of the 76ers Marc Zumoff is the associate director and longtime instructor and Klein Colleges managing director of student media John DiCarlo is the managing director.

The first summit occurred in November 2012 and has been a Temple sports media staple since then, idled only by the pandemic in 2020.

Among the speakers through the years were nationally known journalists Peter King (2014), Kevin Negandhi (2018), Adrian Wojnarowski (2019), and Jemele Hill and Max McGee (2023).
