Explosive first half carries Illinois Wesleyan women to another win

BLOOMINGTON Seizing control with a dominant first half, the Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team breezed past Carthage 63-42 Wednesday at Shirk Center.

Ranked second nationally, the Titans hiked their records to 16-0 overall and 7-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

The Titans led 22-10 after one quarter and 39-17 at the half.

"Very confident start to the game, loved our defense," IWU coach Mia Smith said.

"We kept the (Carthage) bigs in check, held them to eight combined points.

Great defense by Caite Knutson and Laura Mahlum." Illinois Wesleyan's Ava Bardic brought the ball into the frontcourt Wednesday against Carthage at Shirk Center.

Lauren Huber topped the Titans with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Kate Palmer supplied 10 points and seven rebounds and Ava Bardic nine points.

Rebounds were even at 34-34, but IWU committed nine turnovers, 15 fewer than the Firebirds.

Mahlum and Sawyer White each had three of Wesleyan's 13 steals.

Malia Green led Carthage (11-4, 3-3 CCIW0 with 10 points.
