College Roundup: GCC leads PAC Men's All-Sports Trophy; Austin, Herster, Hook lead SRU basketball teams to wins

GROVE CITY The Grove City College athletic department leads the Presidents Athletic Conference Mens All-Sports Trophy race following the 2024-25 fall sports season while Grove Citys womens teams are ranked second in their respective All-Sports Trophy competition.

Grove Citys mens teams accumulated 27.5 points, good for a half-point lead over Geneva.

On the womens side, Grove Citys women have accumulated 35.5 points.

Allegheny currently leads the womens All-Sports competition with 42 points.

Grove Citys 63 combined All-Sports points lead the conference.

Grove City won the conference title in football and added a runner-up finish in mens soccer to help claim the top spot in the mens standings.

Grove City also won the conference title in womens soccer and recorded a second-place finish in womens cross country.

The All-Sports Trophies are annually awarded to the schools which perform the best across the board in league competition.

First-place finishes are worth 11 points, runner-up finishes are worth 10 points and the scale incrementally descends until 11th place is worth one point.

Grove City swept the All-Sports Trophies last year.

Grove City won the 2022-23 Mens All-Sports Trophy and finished second in the womens competition.

Grove City won the womens All-Sports Trophy in 2021-22.

In 2020-21, Grove City won the mens competition and earned runner-up in the womens All-Sports race.

The Grove City College womens basketball team dropped to 4-3 in the Presidents Athletic Conference with a 65-60 home setback Monday night to Allegheny in conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (6-6 overall) led 46-44 after three quarters but Allegheny (7-5, 6-1) outscored the Wolverines, 21-14, over the final 10 minutes.

Junior center Meredith Sherrerd led Grove City with 14 points while senior forward (Grove City High) added 10.

Senior guard Jaden Davinsizer tossed in nine points on three three-pointers.

Grove City shot 23 of 66 (35 percent) from the field for the game while Allegheny finished 25 of 54 (46 percent).

Allegheny hit 16 of 27 (59 percent) attempts in the second half, however.

Grove City, which held a 30-22 halftime lead, went 12 for 32 (38 percent) in the second half.

Hannon, Sherrerd and junior guard Reese Hasley all collected five rebounds to help the Wolverines attain a 40-38 edge on the glass.

Senior guard Mara Polczynski and junior center Emma Ulmer both had four assists.

Hannon and freshman guard Kailey Devlin each assisted three field goals.

Hannon also had three steals.

Sarah Santicola led Allegheny with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

Grove City will host conference rival Geneva at 5:30 p.m.

Wednesday.

The Titans opened the new year with a 118-70 dual meet loss at Florida Southern College, currently the 16th-ranked Division II program in the nation, inside the Nina B.

Hollis Wellness Center Pool in Lakeland, Fla., on Monday.

Florida Southern evened its dual meet record at 2-2 with the win.

Westminster fell to 1-5 in dual meet action this season.

Senior Cory Webster finished first in the 100 freestyle with a Division III B cut and personal-best time of 44.94 seconds.

Sophomore Hayne Webster was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.33 and finished third in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.37).

Seniors Sam Duda and Mason Peck were second and third, respectively, in the 500.

Duda finished in 5:18.50 while Peck finished in 5:46.61.

Freshmen Avery Bumbach and Ethan Schohn finished second and third in the 100 butterfly.

Bumbach posted a time of 56.81 while Schohn finished with a time 1:00.44.

Freshman Jack Katigbak and senior Steel Boyer were second and third in the 100 backstroke, with Katigbak registering a runner-up time of 59.20 while Boyer finished in 1:10.64.

Senior Patrick Benedict was second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.27.

Westminster capped off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, registering a time of 1:35.06.

Members of the relay included Bumbach, Schohn, Duda and Katigbak.

The Titans were dealt a 129-61 dual meet loss by Florida Southern College on Monday in Lakeland, Fla.

Florida Southern evened its dual meet record at 2-2 with the win.

Westminster fell to 2-4 in dual meet action this season.

Senior Isabella Barnabei was second in both the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 1 minute, 10.21 seconds, and 500 (5:52.99).

Senior Sara MacMurdo was second in the 100 freestyle (57.95) while senior Sara Swanson finished second in the 100 backstroke (59.20).

Sophomore Preslie Bodine was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.89).

Senior Amber Krebs finished third in both the 100 freestyle (1:03.80) and 1000 (12:21.18) while freshman Taylor Moats was third in both the 100 breaststroke (1:24.18) and 200 freestyle (2:13.42).

Freshman Isabella Summers was third in both the 100 butterfly (1:17.63) and 500 (6:30.18).

Freshman Avery OSullivan finished third in the 100 backstroke (1:10.64).

Westminster finished second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:54.59.

Members of the relay included Krebs, freshman Daphne Gindlesperger, Moats and MacMurdo.

The Titans 400 medley relay, made up of Swanson, Bodine, Barnabei and Summer, was third with a time of 4:46.20.

The Westminster teams will travel to The College of Wooster on Saturday.

The non-conference dual meet is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.

inside the Timken Natatorium.

SRU once again turned a strong second-half performance into a victory when it bested Pitt-Johnstown, 90-74, Monday at Morrow Field House in PSAC Western Division competition.

In addition to improving its record to 9-6 overall and 6-2 in the PSAC, Mondays win pushed SRUs winning streak to seven games, which is the third longest active streak in the Atlantic Region behind only Gannon (12) and West Chester (12).

Inside the program, The Rocks current winning streak is their longest since rattling off 12 consecutive victories during the 2018-19 season.

Slippery Rock was led Monday by the three-pronged attack of Jomo Goings, (Kennedy Catholic High) and Day Waters: all of whom hit the 20-point plateau.

Goings recorded a 22-point, 12-rebound double-double that came alongside three assists, two steals and one block.

Goings shot 9-of-13 from the field overall including a pair of 3-pointers while also converting both of his free throw attempts.

Austin also had a well-rounded showing against the Mountain Cats with 21 points, four rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal.

Waters meanwhile came off the bench to pour in a season-high 20 points thanks in no small part to a 4-of-6 night from 3-point range.

(Kennedy Catholic High) was Slippery Rocks fifth athlete in double figures with 10 points while Luke Howes went for eight points, three assists and one steal.

Rounding out The Rocks top performers in the win was veteran reserve Bobby Clifford who had five points, five rebounds, two assists and a team-high plus/minus of +18.

For a second straight game Slippery Rock found itself trailing at halftime as the Mountain Cats came out of the break holding a 37-31 advantage.

However, for a second straight game an electric second half performance by The Rock paved the way to another victory.

While Pitt-Johnstown did briefly stretch its advantage out to eight points at 41-33 with 17:38 to play in regulation, the remainder of the game belonged to Slippery Rock which promptly erased its deficit with an impressive 19-4 run that gave SRU a 52-43 lead at the 13:09 mark in the period.

Six Rock athletes accounted for points during the go-ahead run with Howes producing six of his eight points during the four-minute spurt.

The Rock maintained a multiple possession advantage through the remainder of the game with an Austin free throw in the games waning moments giving SRU its largest lead of the night and capping off a 16-point win.

Slippery Rock was practically flawless offensively in the second half.

The Rock made 70 percent (21-for-30) of its field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes while committing just four turnovers and out-rebounding UPJ 19-8.

Waters (17), Austin (13) and Goings (10) all scored in double figures in the second half.

Slippery Rocks 59 points in the second half was its highest 20-minute point total of the year and most since scoring 59 points in the first half against Kutztown last season.

SRU collectively connected on 50 percent (33-of-66) of its field goal attempts on the night, its third game of the year shooting at least 50 percent from the floor.

After an uncharacteristically off night from the foul line in its Jan.

3 win over Seton Hill, SRU returned to form from line by converting 17-of-21 attempts (.810).

Pitt-Johnstown, which saw its record drop to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the PSAC, ended the night shooting 49.2 percent (31-of-63) from the field overall, 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from distance and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) at the foul line.

Ryan Smith scored 21 points to lead UPJ.

Slippery Rock plays the second of its three games this week 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday on the road at California (Pa.).

The womens team benefitted from career-high showings from Regan Atkins (24 points) and (Brookfield High) (21) while topping Pitt-Johnstown in a 71-58 victory Monday night at SRU.

The win SRUs first against a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opponent of the year pushes Slippery Rock to 6-7 overall and back up to .500 in conference play at 4-4.

The Mountain Cats fall to 2-12 on the year and 0-7 in PSAC competition.

SRU overcame a one-point halftime deficit and trailed by as many as five in its 13-point win over UPJ, marking the programs first win over the Mountain Cats in six meetings.

Atkins and Hook combined for 45 of SRUs 71 points (63.3 percent), shooting a cumulative 13-of-20 (65.0 percent) that included five 3-pointers from Hook (5-of-9) and four by Atkins (4-of-6).

Hook also reeled in seven rebounds and two assists.

Slippery Rock is back in action at 5:30 p.m.
