Marlins’ Agustin Ramirez Prepares For 2025 Audition

Catcher Agustin Ramirezs profile photo on WhatsApp includes an image of him carrying a Yankees duffel bag.

But Ramirez said he is all-in on the Marlins, the organization that acquired him on July 27 as the headlining prospect acquired for Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Also in the aforementioned photo is Ramirezs 2-year-old daughter Aileen .

As it turns out, the Marlins love Ramirez.

The 23-year-old Dominican played at Double-A and Triple-A in 2024, batting .267/.358/.487 with 25 home runs, 26 doubles and 93 RBIs in 126 games.

He started 72 games behind the plate.

Ramirez is a 6-foot, 210-pound righthanded hitter who was slump-proof last season.

He recorded an OPS of at least .750 in each month.

Ramirez, who signed with the Yankees for $400,000 in 2018, generates impressive bat speed and exit velocities.

But like many young hitters, plate discipline can be an issue at times.

Behind the plate, Ramirez has a strong arm but a slow release, causing problems in his attempts to throw out basestealers.

He stopped just 10% of 122 stolen base attempts in 2024.

He also needs work on framing, blocking and receiving, according to scouts.

Ramirez continues to work on his defense and studies tape on catching legends including Yadier Molina .

I take a little something from every catcher I watch, Ramirez said.

The Yankees had Ramirez start 22 games at first base last season.

He said he learned a lot at first base, but he made it clear that catcher is his preferred position.

Marlins catchers produced a .528 OPS in 2024worse than every MLB team except the 121-loss White Soxmeaning that opportunity for Ramirez and fellow catching prospect Joe Mack in 2025.

Ive advanced a lot at catcher over the past two years, Ramirez said.

With a little more work, Ive got it, and thats what I really want.

Ive been a catcher my whole career..
