The first game of the new NFL season has been disrupted by an enormous thunderstorm.

The traveled to the but extreme weather conditions at Arrowhead Stadium caused a delay to proceedings with kickoff looking almost certain to be pushed back.

All eyes were on Arrowhead with to watch boyfriend Travis Kelce.

But shortly and with warmups underway, a huge downpour and thunderstorms wreaked havoc on the schedule.

Fans were urged to take cover in the concourses as rain poured down in Missouri less than an hour before the planned kickoff time (8:20 p.m.

ET / 7:20 p.m.

local time).

The thunderstorm saw both teams leave the field as warmups were disrupted and the stands emptied.

The delay to warmups saw players still not back out on the field less than half an hour before the scheduled kickoff time.

The delay left it looking inevitable the scheduled start time would be pushed back.

A message on the video boards read: Please be advised that due to pending weather conditions, all event / game activities will be interrupted.

It was soon announced that the game would not be starting on time.

Prior to the game, the Chiefs tweeted a picture of their stadium captioned: "The calm before the storm".
