Nebraska wrestling ready to face No. 6 Minnesota and an Olympic gold medalist

Minnesota's Gable Steveson prepares for a 285-pound match at the NCAA wrestling championships in 2021 in St.

Minnesota brings a No.

6 ranking and the face of college wrestling to Lincoln for the Big Ten dual opener on Saturday.

The Gophers have eight individuals ranked in the top 11 in their respective weight classes.

None of them are bigger figuratively and literally than Gable Steveson.

Hes a really good athlete, but hes also super strong, powerful, said Nebraska coach Mark Manning of the Minnesota heavyweight.

Hes super aggressive.

When he wants to get a takedown, hes hard to stop.

Hes a great young man, too.

Steveson is back in college wrestling after winning NCAA heavyweight titles in 2021 and 2022 as well as the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Hes won 55 straight college matches and is 51-0 in dual competition.

His first season with Minnesota was 2018-19 when he placed third at nationals.

He received an extra year of eligibility for the 2020 pandemic season, and then he took a redshirt in 2023 and an Olympic redshirt last year.

During the past two years, he tried out for the Buffalo Bills and has been involved in WWE.

But he decided this fall to use his final collegiate season.

Hes 3-0 and hasnt competed since a Dec.

1 dual against South Dakota State when he recorded a 19-4 technical fall in less than three minutes.

Steveson is expected to be in Minnesotas lineup Saturday against Nebraskas Harley Andrews.

What a great opportunity, Manning said for Andrews.

Not many guys get to say, Hey, I wrestled an Olympic champion.

You never know, but you got to go out and try.

Its about our effort.

I know this if he doesnt try, he wont win, thats guaranteed.

We can just control what we can control.

Andrews is ranked 24th at heavyweight, according to InterMat.

Hes 8-6 this season, coming off last Sundays 11-6 loss to Northern Iowas Lance Runyon.

Overall, the fourth-ranked Huskers are looking to bounce back from a 24-9 loss at Northern Iowa.

We have a lot of little things we have to clean up, Manning said.

It was a head-scratcher in regards to there were five (weight) classes we had within our grasp that we should have won and we didnt.

Thats how it goes in dual meets.

Were going to learn from it and were going to get better.

Minnesotas going to be a good challenge.

The Gopher-Husker match could feature five matchups between top 10 opponents.

Those include matches at 125 pounds (NUs Caleb Smith vs.

Cooper Flynn), 141 (NUs Brock Hardy vs.

Vance Vombaur), 157 (NUs Antrell Taylor vs.

Tommy Askey), 165 (NUs Bubba Wilson vs.

Andrew Sparks) and 184 (NUs Silas Allred vs.

Max McEnelly).

Manning expects close matches again to decide the dual.

Five of UNIs seven wins last weekend were by three points or less.

Manning said there was nothing wrong with his teams aggressiveness that day, but UNI scored on counterattacks in winning four of its decisions.

Theres areas where we need to be sharper and more intense in regards to finishing our shots, Manning said.

Im glad that (loss) happened January 5 and not March 5.
