Minot State upends Dragons men's basketball, sits atop NSIC

MOORHEAD The MSU Moorhead Dragons mens basketball team was defeated mightily on Friday night.

6-ranked Dragons fell to No.

12 Minot State Beavers in a 76-52 rout in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Friday at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Minot State surged in the second half, outscoring MSUM 46-26 and shooting 59.4% from the field.

The Beavers built a 26-point lead with 7 minutes, 32 seconds left in the game on a Sam West hook shot.

We started off pretty slow, said Dragons head coach Tim Bergstraser.

We had some good looks, they just weren't falling.

We just need to be better with our execution.

The Dragons fell to 9-2 and 4-1 in the NSIC.

Both teams entered the matchup undefeated in conference play.

Minot State rose to 14-0 and 5-0 in the conference.

The Beavers led 30-26 at halftime.

MSUM was plagued by another injury near the end of the second half.

Point guard Jacob Beeninga suffered a leg injury and was taken out of the game with just under five minutes left in the first half.

The loss of Beeninga took a lot of the wind out of the teams sails, Bergstraser said.

Forward Shaun Wysocki paced the Dragons with 14 points.

Jacob Jennison snagged eight rebounds.

The Dragons shot 18 of 51 (35%) from the field overall, including 3 of 12 from the 3-point line.

The Dragons shot 13-for-21 from the free-throw line.

Minot State forward Caleb Van De Griend tallied a double-double for the Beavers with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

West added 14 points, six assists and three steals.

The Beavers shot 29 of 61 (48%) from the field, including 7 of 15 from beyond the arch.

Minot State was 11-for-12 from the foul line.

MSUM hosts Minnesota Crookston on at 5:30 p.m.

We need to get back to playing Dragons basketball, Bergstraser said.

Start scrapping a little more, and play more physical and tough.

Following Saturdays matchup, the Dragons will be on holiday break until a Jan.

3 matchup with Concordia-St.

Paul.

Bergstraser said a win is needed with some time off ahead.

Nobody wants to go into a break on a loss, Bergstraser said.

It doesnt matter if its ugly or pretty ...

We got to do whatever it takes to try to win that game tomorrow..
