Three exciting, effective and productive running backs on one football team is often referred to as a three-headed monster.

As Bills fans, we need to take some time to truly appreciate our own three-headed monster that our top three backs have become this year James Cook, Ray Davis and Ty Johnson, the latter of whom had his national debutante ball last Sunday against the Lions.

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook celebrates with fans after scoring a touchdown during a preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on Aug.

12, 2023, in Orchard Park.

No one is saying that the Bills 2024 triumvirate are all-time, three-headed monsters like King Ghidorah of the "Godzilla" films, Cerberus of Greek mythology, or even Fluffy from "Harry Potter." But sometimes it seems that way, what with the way they play.

Ghidorah is a popular kaiju (Japanese for strange beast) who first appeared in the 1964 film Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster , and has been featured in numerous Godzilla films and other media.

Maybe the Bills have their own King Ghidorah in JamesTyRay.

And there have always been notable three-headed monsters on one NFL team.

The 1972 Miami Dolphins are the most obvious.

This trio led the Fins to the NFLs only perfect season 17-0.

Larry Csonka was the bruising power back; the clever, lively and quick Mercury Morris had mercurial speed; and Jim Kiick was a reliable runner and receiver.

Together, they dominated defenses.

The 2007 San Diego Chargers were another good group.

LaDainian Tomlinson, Michael Turner, Darren Sproles.

Tomlinson was an MVP-caliber running back, having set the NFL single-season touchdown record the year before with 31.

Turner was a dangerous, powerful backup, and Sproles added spectacular plays in both the run game and special teams, making this a dynamic, well-rounded trio.

The Bills' dynamic triplets each bring unique skills to the lineup, and yet each are also able to run for both speed and power.

They can catch the ball out of the backfield and downfield, and they can block for the rarely sacked Josh Allen.

This three-headed monster may be more aptly referred to as twelve-limbed, as they use all their arms and legs with great efficacy.

As the primary back, Cook has exceptional acceleration, balance, vision and explosiveness, along with surprising power.

He has cruised to 1,000-plus yards from scrimmage already (828 rushing, 232 receiving).

Davis quickly emerged as a powerful complement with a violent running style that excels in short-yardage situations, as well as the speed to break a long one.

With 87 carries for 357 yards and some timely catches, Davis has been crucial in sustaining drives and maintaining offensive balance.

Johnson adds instant energy with his foot speed and sure hands.

Against the Lions, he led all receivers by catching all five targets for 114 yards.

His flexibility allows offensive coordinator Joe Brady to craft mismatches and get crucial productivity.

Ty Johnson is a highlight reel waiting to happen on any touch.

In their history, the Bills have had several seasons featuring impressive RB trifectas.

This was Simpsons most legendary season, when he became the first player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards (2,003 in 14 games).

Powerful fullback Braxton complemented Juice with his blocking and short-yardage bulldozing, plus 494 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Watkins provided depth and an additional threat, adding 414 yards on the ground.

The NFL MVP in 1991, Thomas rushed for 1,407 yards, caught 62 passes for 631 more, with 12 total TDs.

Always reliable backup Davis added 624 hard-earned rushing yards and five scores, ensuring little drop-off when Thomas rested.

Gardner, the fullback, had 146 yards and matched Davis with four touchdowns.

This week, the Bills take on the lowly New England Patriots (saying that never gets old).

They can break the all-time NFL record for consecutive games scoring 30 or more points.

Our faithful, of course, still needs to treat every game as a must-win to keep up the mojo heading into the playoffs, along with our chance at the top seed in the AFC.

But our three-headed monster, JamesTyRay, unlike King Ghildorah, needs to protect and support our very own Godzilla in battle Allen.

Perhaps the most famous line from the Godzilla series went like this: Nature always has a way of balancing itself.

The only question is, what part will we play? What part will our three-headed monster play this week? We shall see.

Go Godzilla.

Go Bills.
