FAIR HAVEN Kate Hadwen was the MVP of the Mary Canfield Holiday Tournament for the second straight year with 18 points in Monday nights 61-32 victory over Mount Abraham.

The Slaters went 2-0 in the two-day event, beating Otter Valley on the first night with Hadwen scoring 22.

Basketball is very important to Kate, Fair Haven coach Kyle Wilson said.

It will continue to be important after high school.

Hadwen said after accepting the MVP trophy that she will be playing the game in college and will announce where soon.

Basketball is very important and the late Mary Canfield was important to Fair Haven.

She was a tireless worker and supporter of Fair Haven Union High School athletics and the Fair Haven Post 49 American Legion baseball team.

Her husband Bill Canfield presented the hardware to Hadwen.

The Slaters wasted no time in establishing their superiority, forging a large early lead.

Hadwen drove to the hoop and beat the first quarter buzzer to extend the Slaters lead to 19-5.

I think everyone pitched in on offense and we really ate away at their man-to-man defense, Hadwen said.

We have so many dangerous players.

The Slaters are 2-1 after opening with a tough loss to a good Burlington team.

I think that it really helped us playing Burlington first, Hadwen said.

Isabelle Cole followed Hadwen in scoring with 14 points and joined her on the All-Tournament Team.

Mount Abraham was represented on the All-Tournament Team by Abba Parker.

Also on the All-Tournament Team were Otter Valleys Matelin LaPorte, who had 13 points on the first night against the Slaters, and Burr and Burton Academys Maeven Virgilio who poured in 19 points against against Otter Valley.

Hadwen completed a three-point play with a drive to the hoop in the closing seconds of the second quarter to make the Slaters halftime edge 32-13.

They had the game as good as in the book by the end of the third quarter, 47-24.

Orianna Kerr followed Hadwen and Cole in the scoring column for Fair Haven with eight points.

Louisa Painter and Gen Foran had eight points apiece for the Eagles.

Playing a stellar floor game for the Slaters were Maddy Perry and Hadwen with five assists apiece.

I thought we played well in all facets of the game, Wilson said.

We did not turn the ball over and we rebounded extremely well.

He really appreciated the way all of the players supported the team, meaning the bench players created a lot of noise and encouragement for the front-line players and the starters did the same for the bench players in the latter stages of the game.

The Slaters connected on eight 3-point field goals with Cole, Audrey Perry and Quinn Murphy each nailing two of them.

During the postgame ceremony, Fair Haven Athletic Director Eric Ramey recognized Mount Abraham for their lengthy participation in the tournament.

The Canfield has been in place about two decades and the Bristol school has been part of it since the beginning.

Ramey cited them for being great guests and competitors.

The evening also left the Eagles with a 2-1 record.

The Slaters next stop will be on Saturday at Otter Valley and Mount Abraham travels to Montpelier on Monday, Dec.

30.

The nights first game saw Burr and Burton Academy topple Otter Valley 50-36.

Breanna Bovey led the Otters in scoring with nine points.

She was followed by Miley Lape and Tegan Boynton with eight each and Jazalynn Madrigal with seven.

Virgilios 19 led BBA.

Burr and Burton coach Greg Harrington was impressed with the performance turned in by Virgilio.

She got a lot of rebounds and tonight she finished well, Harrington said.

We improved tonight.

We struggled making some shots but we kept battling, Otter Valley coach Ray Counter said.

There are some things we have to just keep working on.

We will regroup and we will see them next month (in Manchester), Counter said.

Burr and Burton heads to Mount Mansfields tournament on Friday where their first-round opponent will be Essex.

The Otters (now 1-2) stayed in the fray for much of the night.

When Madrigal connected on a 3-pointer in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, it sliced the lead to 39-26.

But BBAs Orly Nathan answered with her own trey and the Bulldogs pulled away from there, stretching the lead to 22 at one point.

The Otters have an imposing challenge on Saturday when Fair Haven pays a visit to Brandon..
