The phone call that might prove to be among the most pivotal moments in the history of the football program at The University of North Carolina arrived in mid-November.

Bubba Cunningham, the athletics director at UNC, had not yet officially started the search for Mack Browns replacement but overtures were coming in, nonetheless.

Calls from agents.

From others representing coaches.

From people throughout the college football industry, recommending names; stumping for their guys, throwing out possibilities about this potential candidate or that one.

The process is hectic but fairly routine for any major-conference college athletics director who might be in the market for a new football coach.
