There were several stories about how 's first tenure with the ended.

But whether he was fired or resigned, Jackson was no longer the Lakers' head coach three days after the Detroit Pistons swept them in the 2004 NBA Finals.

While what actually transpired is uncertain, it cannot be debated that his relationship with deteriorated to the point of no repair that year and that he had second thoughts on whether he would still be able to handle his superstar player moving forward.
