Minnesota West women's basketball drops third-straight game

WORTHINGTON The womens basketball team at Minnesota West Community and Technical College is currently on a three-game losing streak as it gets closer to the end of non-conference play.
On Wednesday, the fourth-ranked Lady Jays (5-5) hosted Des Moines Area Community College and lost 64-56.
After starting the season 4-0, Minnesota West has since dropped five of its last six, previously losing to Gustavus and Dakota States JV squads before Wednesday.
ADVERTISEMENT Against the Bears, Minnesota West took a three-point lead after the first quarter before being outscored by seven in the second quarter to trail 29-25 at halftime.
Then the Bears stormed ahead in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 54-37 heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Lady Jays tried to mount a comeback, outscoring Des Moines Area 19-11 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Bears closed out an eight-point win anyway.
The two teams each shot the ball at a similar rate with Minnesota West actually outshooting Des Moines Area 37.7% to 35.1%, but the Bears made the difference in 3-point shooting.
They connected on six treys, while the Lady Jays shot 0-21 from behind the arc.
West also shot just 4-of-11 from the free-throw line.
The battle on the boards was also close with the Bears barely outrebounding the Jays 48-47, but Minnesota West had more turnovers, 23 compared to 18 for the Bears.
Sadie Krahling and Rhea Tucker combined for 43 of Minnesota Wests 56 points with Krahling getting 23 and Tucker adding 20.
Tucker also finished with her third double-double of the season and second in a row, grabbing 17 rebounds.
Maddie Kamm and Katrina Schutz each totaled four assists and Schutz grabbed eight boards as well.
Ava Parrish added five rebounds and three assists.
Chloe Costello paced the Bears offensively, scoring 21 points in just 20 minutes off the bench.
Mary Walker and Breeley Clayburg each chipped in 10 points.
ADVERTISEMENT The Lady Jays are in the midst of a 10-game home stand and will take the court at the Minnesota West Center for Health and Wellness again this weekend for a mens/womens doubleheader.
Both teams will face off against Minnesota North College-Itasca Friday and then against Northland CTC Saturday.
After that, both teams will be home again for the annual New Years Classic Dec.
30 and 31.
First will be Southwestern Community College that Monday and then will be North Dakota State College of Science that Tuesday.
The Lady Jays will have one more non-conference game Jan.
4 against Bethany Lutheran Colleges JV team before MCAC South Division play begins Jan.
