Cameron Menzies couldn't hold back tears as he faced a disappointing loss to fellow darts player Leonard Gates amid a boozy crowd at the PDC World Championship.

This tournament is the biggest in professional darts and draws a significant TV audience in the UK , with thousands of fans attending each year.

Gates, a truck driver from Texas , secured his 3-1 victory in style with a stunning 122 checkout to clinch the match.

Meanwhile, Menzies, known for his expressive personality on stage, seemed overwhelmed by the antagonistic audience at Alexandra Palace, drawing both jeers and mocking applause for every missed mark.

His partner Fallon Sherrock - another darts player - watched from the VIP area as Menzies continued to play through his tears during the final stages.

Gates, on the other hand, had a debut marked by both an electric walk-on and some spectacular shots early in the game, including finishes of 138, 120, and an 85 via bullseye.

However, as the match heated up, the crowd's harsh treatment towards Menzies was both inconsiderate and brutal.

In the wake of his win, Gates joyfully remarked: "Merry Christmas - this is freaking awesome!" Later, reflecting on Menzies' difficult moment, Gates expressed his awareness of his opponent's condition, saying: "I was aware of Cammy.

I want my opponent to play the best against me.

So, I can see what I can do against them.

"I told him, 'Use the energy, don't look at it as a negative, look at it as a positive.

Just use that energy, play a lot more darts, get better, keep showing the PDC what we can do.'" Menzies, however, only mustered an average of 83.77, hitting only 5 out of 32 attempts at doubles.

Sherrock saw her partner struggle deeply on stage, which only brought shame to those fans who reveled in Menzies' emotional capitulation.

There's a stark contrast between light-hearted chants like "Scotland get battered everywhere they go" and the targeted tormenting of someone teetering on the brink.

Sky Sports analyst Glen Durrant remarked: "On the floor, Cammy has been the best player in the room.

He's the one that has stood out.

It feels like it is a different game when you go on stage.

"It is just not happening for him.

He is full of emotion.

When you look at his preparation, he will have to work out if he is to find a solution about why he doesn't play on the stage as he does on the floor.

He's extremely talented.

But at the end, it was a little worrying, I didn't know if he was getting upset or if the heat was getting to him.

It was a pretty bizarre ending.

"He has to find a way through this.

The excitement of playing on that stage is there but 16 percent on the doubles was going to be his Achilles heel.".
